I was curious. I have a Hunter 27 (75-83 series). I was wondering how fast she moves in nice winds? In other words, what's her hull speed? Does any one have this information? If not, does anyone have a reasonable aproximation? Marina

How fast you can sail :)

Actual boat speed depends on a lot of parameter such as: 1.) the type and condition of your sails 2.) the condition of your bottom paint 3.) the types of propeller drag (i.e. two or three prop, folding, etc.) 4.) the weight of the gear you have added to the boat 5.) how good you are at sail trimming and reading the wind and sea The theoretical hull speed is 6.2 knots for the H27, check the link to the hunter 27 performance ratios. Fair Winds, Clyde :)

Dratz...!

Only 6.2? Geesh! I'm stepping down in performance. I own a couple of smaller yachts...A South Coast 22 and Luger 26. Both sail at least 7 knotts. And since they have retractable keels, on a down wind jibe, I can get above that if I can get her on a semi hull plain. Oh well, at least my Hunter has lots of room. :) Marina

7.5 by GPS sustained in 20 knots

That's pushing past hull speed. I've done it on a beam reach with a 110 and main, and on a broad reach with the cruising spinnaker. We had about 3 hours around 7 knots in both configurations going to Erie from Ashtabula last summer. But I think the big thrill is sailing her right in good winds. I don't think you will notice the actual speed difference. But planing is not in the game in my experience. David Lady Lillie '77 h27

H27 Speed

I owned a 1979 H27 for about 15 years. This was the deep keel configuration. I almost exclusively sailed with a 150% genny. When the was more than 15 knots, I always reefed the main. The boat will easily sail at 5 to 6 knots to windward in heavy air. Downwind it will surf at higher speeds. I clocked 7 knots many times. In ~10 knots of wind, she would do 4 to 5 knots upwind, but slow significantly downwind. I used a whisker pole on the genny downwind and it really helped increase speed. I also had a cruising spinaker which really helped in light wind. All of these speeds were as measured by the KM (not by GPS).

Knot meter Moisture

I got my Hunter 27 up to 40 knots once in heavy winds. But that was when I was tailoring her. (o.k.! Bad joke :-( ) Speaking of Knot meters. Mine seems to have some moisture in it. I just can not figure out how it got in there. I have it siliconed to the companion way. Has anyone else had this problem with the Knot meters on the Hunter 27's?
