Negotiating for 2001 Hunter 260. What are the main flaws to get corrected or enhancements I need before I buy. I have read that the rudder is suspect and that the companionway may leak. Anything else that I need to be aware of or to examine to insure I'll be happy with my future purchase? Thanks for your input!

Check the Archives

Check the archives. There were some real issues with these boats several years ago about leaks around the transom. Don't know about the 2001 model but I would read the archives very carefully.

Even though my companion way leaks a little in heavy rains, its still a fantastic boat for the money. I've sailed it in the Gulf in 25 kt winds and it handle very well. We put a tarp over the companion way for storage.

Keep 10-20%

If you keep 10-20% of the amount, you have something to deal with, when things come up on your first tour. In most cases (I've bought 5 different boats new as well as used) something will come up that don't meet your expectations. And in my experience it's a matter of attitude - if I start having second thoughts about my choice I will certainly find lots of flaws. And on the other hand, if I love sailing and the Hunter, I will fix it with a smile beeing happy to have learned something again. Toomas

A new H260

The rudder was my only manufactures problem. I did get a small tear in my main sail from the shroud spreaders, so I recommend buying the spreader boots, but that's not a manufacture problem. And have the dealer put on the first coat of bottom paint. My dealer told me it takes some prep. You'll want to add a bunch of stuff once it's yours like storage racks, and electrical connections. It's fun!

Get It, you will love it!

Doug, Suggest you get a companionway cover first thing, it will fix any leaks in that area. See the Photo fourm for pictures. Get the boat my wife and I just love it. Jim S/V Java

structure

Although the 260 is a generally well built boat, there is one glaring deficiency in the hull within the water ballast area. The fiberglass is so thin, you can easily deflect it with your thumb and for that reason, it doesn't do well on a boat lift. I have had mine fixed and I'm aware of a couple more in the area with the same problem. As of 2001, this flaw has not been resolved, but Hunter is backing up their warrantee. The problem with the hull joint has been corrected after 1998 by changing the adhesive from a hard grout to 5200. Jeff Peltier
