I just bought an H-260 which is equipped with roller furling. What halyard do you use for raising the mast. On the boat I have, the jib halyard stays attached to the top of the jib and it is rolled on the furler.

halyard

If you have a CDI furler, the jib halyard is an internal halyard which leaves the original halyard unused. The original halyard is the one used to raise the mast. On my H240 it is on the port side and comes aft to a rope clutch. If you have the manual it is very clear. Hope this helps.

Mast Raising

The Jib Halyard should not be attatched to anything if you have CDI Rollerfurling. The Jib Halyard ( Red One on Port Side ) is the one used to raise the Mast.

Main Sheet

You use the main sheet block system to raise the mast with the mast raising pole supplied with the boat.

If Your Furler is not CDI...

...and the jib halyard is attached to the top of the jib, you'll probably have to remove the jib from the furler in order to free up the jib halyard. The link below is to an online manual for the 240/260, and it has a description of the procedure.

Sam, To raise your mast with a furling jib you

use the jib halyard to attach to the gin pole(cleat the jib halyard very securly on the mast) and then the main sheet block and tackle assembly to attach from the gin pole to the u-bolt in the anchor locker. The gin pole should have a 10 to 15 degree angle leaning toward the top of the mast. The furling unit is probably a CDI unit that is hooked to the mast with its own stainles steel internal stay and becomes the forestay. You really need to read a copy of the Hunter owners manual before doing this operation. The manual should explain if your boat has temporary mast raising shrouds or the builtin type on the later model 260. The mast raising I spoke of was for my H26 and the 260 is the same in many cases, somewhat different in others. You need to know what your boat fits. If you were to drop the mast it would be quite expensive. Also if you bend the shroud toggle bolts you will get to open the wallet. There are archives on this site that address mast tension on the 260 and it would be good for you to read these articules and check your mast tensions. Fair winds Ray S/V Speedy

Take Your Time

If you haven't done it before, I'd strongly suggest that you have the dealer or seller of the boat go through the mast raising operation with you once. Alternatively, find someone in your area who's done it. It's not a big deal but there's plenty of opportunity to bend turnbuckles or worse. You don't want to start out on the wrong note. Good Luck!
