I'm looking at buying a damaged Hunter 26. It was grounded in a storm. Has a long crack in the bottom and the keel was broken off. The ballast no longer holds water.
Questions:
Is the ballast tank part of the hull and therefore perforated by the crack in the hull?
Is this likely to be easy or impossible to to repair?

I'm getting some pictures sent later this week, so I'll post them when I get them.
thank you

Yes, the hull makes up the lower half of the ballast tank.

I suspect the repair costs will exceed the value of a sound 26. It's the old question of how you want to spend your time; repairing or sailing.

thank your. Are there things I can look for?

Thank you. Being realistic is definitely something I want to keep in mind. I'll be bringing a wise old sa;t along with me to help keep it realistic. But is there anything that I can be watching out for in determining the integrety'/repairability of the hull? the boat didn't sink after the hull was cracked. Is that a good sign that the ballast will hold water once the hull is repaired?

thank you

Good on you for keeping an open mind about this boat. I agree with Dave, it sounds like it is (as the insurance companies say) 'beyond economic repair'

Even it you fix it, it's a salvage boat that has sunk. Your re-sale value is crap.

As a water ballast boat, the fact that it did not go straight to the bottom has little merit.

Gotta see some pictures.. 'long crack' and 'keel was broken off' leave a lot to the imagination! Unless it was given to me for free, I would probably run away from this one.. and maybe even then. More than likely you will wind up paying way more than the boat is worth to get it seaworthy. Some of the most expensive boats out there started off very cheap ;)

Cheers,

If it is a water ballast 26, the swing keel or what I call a swing center board is over $1,000 built by Foss Foam.

As for the crack, it depends on where and how long. If you know how to do fiber glass repairs, then it would be easy if exterior. If interiour, then it would be more difficult.

Where is the boat located. I would like to see some photos. Maybe it could be fixed. You can call me the Godfather of the water ballast.

h26 hull damage photos

thank you for your responses. Helping me keep a level head. I've got some pictures. A bit more than cracks I'm afraid. does this look repairable? the guy wants 4,000 obo with the trailer. Up here in Canada some people ask that much for the trailer. The asking price seems to be abou. 17-20,000. It didn't actually sink, it got pushed up ont he rocks in a storm.
Thank you for your thoughts, they are very much appreciated.

It does not look like the glass is even exposed. Just some gelcoat damage.
Clearly the structure is intact with no cracks/holes. If there is not glass showing then that part is very easy to fix, gelcoat and elbow grease to smooth it out.
My other concern is the hull to bulkhead and deck seams. Take a look around inside where each bulkhead attached to the hull and look for cracks or separation. Ditto the hull to deck seam. If those check out you should be OK from a hull standpoint. I clearly am not addressing the other systems that may or may not have gotten damaged like the;
mast step, spreaders and shrouds, chain plates, rudder and steering gear etc

I would not pay much of anything for it - the owner would probably have to pay to have it junked anyway. Maybe the rigging is worth something.

Please advise where the boat is so I can take a look. If it were not for me, the water ballast would not have occured. I know the H26 and 260. For the record, I outsold every other dealer, introduced them, added to it when others could not and so forth. Please let me be the judge.

Can you email me at davecondon@mindspring.com where the boat is. Many thanks.
