I'm looking at a Hunter 25 on the hard in a local marina. It looks like it's had a hard go of it. First, how do I dechipher the serial # HUN 25 0 37/M7/41/G ? I'm assuming that it's a 25, looking at some of the pics on here. Second, I presently own a Catalina 27 "the bus" and a McVay Minuet "the sports car." I'm intrigued by the look of this Hunter as it has a flat top and simple lines. Are these tough boats? It looks like it took quite a smack on the port side hull and has a definite bullseye. Are these foam core? The owner is asking $1,000 for it. It needs some definite TLC and some new keel bolts. Any suggestions as to what I might look for or be aware of? Thanks, Geoff

I'm not familiar with that particular boat and your description of a "flat top" has me baffled, but if you scroll down this list of threads you'll find a discussion of Hunter 25's wherein an owner states his boat is a solid cored hull with plywood cored decks, which is pretty typical construction for that size and class of boat. It'd be interesting to see a pic of the boat in question. By the HIN, it would appear that the boat was built in Feb. 1974. I've left a link to a site that explains HIN's FYI.

Doesn't sound like a good deal to me...

I'd stick with my Cat 27...if I were you.

Thanks...

Thanks for the responses. Thanks for the link. I'm not thinking of getting rid of the Catalina. It's fun for weekends. I had no intention of buying the Hunter 25 for $1,000 as it is. I just like projects and I want to see what kind of boat it is and see if it's worth saving.. How are they to sail? Any complaints? I just hate to see any sailboat go to waste. The "flat top" meant that the top of the cabin was flush to the deck as it went forward. I'll try to run down and get a picture of it.
