I have a 2005 Hunter 25 with wheel steering. After sailing for a while I notice steering becomes more difficult, and I'll look back at the rudder and notice that it has come up from it's fully down position. All that seems to keep the rudder down is gravity, which apparently isn't quite enough.

I looked at the rudder details in the manual. Unfortunately the detail only shows the tiller-based system. It mentions that the rudder locks in the down position, but it does not explain the mechanism.

Has anybody experienced the same rudder problem and come up with a solution that "locks" the rudder in its down position, but still allows it to pop up in a grounding?

What I do.

I just tighten down the nut (the one that looks like a handle). If you tighten it down and you have the proper nylon bushings between the metal bracket and the rudder itself, it should stay put.

Do you have the lifting bracket and line on it? That also helps keep it in place when in the down position. While I don't have a handy photo, it should have a pivot bracket, a black line, and a pulley. The line gets cleated on the cleat on the stern.

The reason it is kicking up it that the rudder floats.
