Hunter 25, rudder shaft

Had to remove the rudder as it had a crack in the leading edge, which was discovered while cleaning the bottom. When the rudder and shaft were removed, the shaft was found to have a plastic/teflon sleeve around it, which evidently assists the rotation of the shaft in the fiberglass shaft recepticle in the boat. Now, anyone know where I can get such an animal? It's quite a thin sheet, and probably have to be sub'd. Thanks. Skip

Me too

If you could manage it, I'd appreciate pics of the whole rudder assembly. I acquired a '78 last summer that had run aground backwards and not only bent the rudder post but pulled the whole assembly down about a foot destroying much of the surrounding support area (and I think I'm missing some stainless steel pieces). I'd love to see a complete set of what is supposed to be there. email address is giff@<nospam>speakeasy.net

25 rudder

I have a 1974 hunter 25. I have dropped the ruder for repair and rebuilding. I don't know if it is the same as your 1978 setup but I can get pics of where I am with it now. As for the 'teflon' sleeve. West System describes a way to line the rudder tube with epoxy which looks fairly easy to do, though time consuming. May be what was done to yours. Basicaly injecting epoxy around the sahft while it is in the tube. Wax or something on the shaft to keep it from sticking. In their $3 how to book on f/g boat repair. A great investment I might add. and the rudder tube

rudder tube from inside lazarette. I have tabbed the tube to the underside of the cockpit seat and to the hull. Then wrapped it in cloth and epoxy. Then thickened epoxy putty gooped the whole thing. Bulletproof is the goal.

And the rudder

Best pic I could find of the rudder itself while on the boat.

H25 Rudder Wobble

I had a 1979 '25 which had more than usual wobble to the rudder. There were no bearings to replace; just the stainless shaft wearing the fiberglass ruddder tube out-of-round. I scratch sanded the inside to clean fiberglass with 60 grit paper on a smaller tube; then epoxy laminated a piece of mylar faced sailcloth to the inside of the tube using the rudder tube as a form. It tightened up and eliminated the movement. I might have prefered a teflon sheet if I knew where to find one. The West System booklet using graphite impregnated epoxy is another probably better way to solve the underlying 'wobble' problem. The other necessary repair is to take down the interior wood mast support and make sure it is solid and has enough bearing under the deck. I needed to splice in some mahagony blocks at the top where someone had trimmed away too much of the original teak post to run wiring.

Yes to the compression post looksee.

Not applicable to me since I have completely guttes my h25 and am rebuilding a diff interior configuration. But..... as I was dismantling the original interior, it became obvious that the compression post structure was a bad design unless one really kept the boat dry. As the pic shows I have rearranged this a little bit. Charlie
