Hunter 25 deck organizer and clutch mounting

Ahoy gents!

I recently purchased a 1982 Hunter 25 and as I get better at sailing, I find myself wanting better line organization...particularly a way to deal with the halyards from the cockpit. I would like to do something similar to the following:

The following locations seem the most appropriate, with A being the deck organizer, and B being the clutch.

Will my boat have any problems with these components mounted in these locations? Any thoughts, suggestions, or experience are welcome.

Re: Hunter 25 deck organizer and clutch mounting

Can I suggest that you also post on the Cherubini Hunter (which is what you have acquired -- good choice!) sub-forum? Other owners of your model frequent there ... and some might have boats with cockpit led retrofits. http://forums.hunter.sailboatowners.com/forumdisplay.php?f=44

Looking at the picture you included of your deck, the main thing that jumps out is that the spot where the clutches and winch would be mounted is curved. A piece of teak (or white marine plastic) with the bottom contoured to the shape of the curve might be necessary. You will have to determine also what is underneath the areas of the new hardware. Might be hollow or might be cored. Simple wood screws into the deck layer of fiberglass aren't enough for organizer blocks, clutches, and winches. From below, it's advisable to add backing plates for the through-bolts. That probably will require cutting/drilling the interior liner. Are you new to boat ownership? If so, you will find much information on these forums about techniques for bedding the hardware with caulk or butyl tape to prevent leaks into the core.

Re: Hunter 25 deck organizer and clutch mounting

Ahoy Savet,
I have the same boat. The same model. The same design. The same year and would like to do the exact same custom line organization upgrade for the mainsail this spring. After looking at all my options, I concur on you choice of locations for the hardware and share your concerns about the shape of the mounting locations.
I sure would appreciate hearing about any insight you gain on this project.
Nice job on your photographs.
Sincerely,
Xram10

Savet;

contact tim McRorie at All Seasons on Lake Norman. He probably will give you some good advice as he has worked on Hunters for many years to include the 25. That boat sure looks clean. I trust Tim for what it is worth.
