I do have a Hunter 25.5 1984. We have owned it for 4 months and now after doing some major repairs we are out sailing it. I have at it at Hull speed 6.5 knots. Made the wife watch the knot meter. That was in winds between 12 and 15 knots. That was with the orginal sails, i think the head sail is a 100% or 105% and full main. We have experimented with just the headsail in that breeze and then reefed the main and then full main. Most of the time the heel was 20 to 25 % It was at 30% when we hit the 6.5 knot. The lower shrouds went loose and the wife started to complain . Lowered the sails and tighted the shroud and sailed again. Got back up to speed and they slacked a little. Until we got to that speed the shroud never slacked. The boat did require me to work the traveler to keep it under control. My wife is very brave and held the course while I worked the sails. She trusted me..( She is a little crazy like me :) Lets talk about the Hunter 25.5 experience. I love to hear the details on what others think. I am in the market for a new roller furling and sails. Thanks Clif

Sailing a 25.2 Hunter 1984

I bought my 1984 Hunter 25.5 a year ago. I was affraid of letting it heal over 15 degrees since it is a shoal keel of 3' 6". However I have begun to see that even at 25 degrees of heel it is pretty stable. In San Francisco Bay winds are typically 20-25 Miles per hour. Last weekend I took it to San Francisco and circled Alcatraz island and averaged 6.5 knots. I have installed a 135% roller jib. I usually sail with the main reefed and the roller jib out to 100%. This was the best sailing I had ever done. It is very roomy inside and the beam is 9' 1", wider than Catalina 250. It is also trailerable. I think it is the best boat size ever made. The mast is heavy duty. Since I bought it I have installed a 4 cycle engine, Roller Jib and painted the bottom. I have done no other repairs. It works grate. Have fun with yours. I am going to with mine!

My 2 cents...

1) Love the boat and everything about it, i.e. from sailing to size, comfort, etc. 2)Upgrades included new main from Sobstat and CDI FF4 RF with ball bearing. Also had my 150% genoa converted from hank-on to furler. 3)Depending on point of sail, wind, waves, etc.... I have recorded on my GPS just over 9 MPH (about 8 knots). WOW!!! Surfing down the wave :) 4)With all sails up I can hit hull speed in light air. This boat moves. Her bottom is smooooooth and clean. FOR CLIF: I got a great price on my Sobstad main with lose foot, $800. One reef point, full bat at top, rest are half bats. All H25.5 markings, etc. The CDI RF is great. Least expensive, easy to use, never jams and simple. MY ISSUES/PROBLEMS: If you haven't read my response to Eric's post yesterday, I'm still having problems with heel and speed in winds over about 12-15 knots. I've read the books, taken couses, etc, etc. and can't get what "I think" it should be. My wife says I'm to anal. Anyway, here's my question, how does your H25.5 sail and what's your KPH with main only in winds 12-15 knots on any reach (not a run)? Since my genoa is 150% I could only reef it to 110% at best and still maintain any good sail shape and pointing. 110% is still too much sail up... for me. I don't like 30+ degree heel. Thanks to all you H25.5 skippers. BobKat

I need new sails

Cliff, as I pointed out before, I find my 25.5 loves 14-16 knot winds. Gets to 6kts and feels very comfortable, probably 20-25 degrees of heel (my heel meter does not work, so just a guess). No reefs in that wind, roller furl jib (110 I think), full mail. Been wanting to get out my 150% to see what it can do in somewhat lighter air. Just had one of those great days two weeks ago with my brother & Dad on board. By the way, had her out in 25kts, gusting to 30kts, small craft advisory, main reefed, jib reefed (rolled up 1/2 way), boat could take it better than I could. Made headway, but not 6.5kts, just too much wind. I have never seen any speed over water above 6.5kts. Seems I get more around 5kts most of the time unless the Long Island Sound is flat with perfect steady wind, no gusts! I think I need new sails, mine are certainly stretched, boat tend too heel a bit too much for my guests comfort with gusts. - UnderDog '86 25.5 w/ 4'6" fin
