Hi,

I am wondering what original lines went through the boom.

I don't have a reefing line inside my boom. Instead, at the gooseneck I have a two lines, one on the starboard and one on the port side, both using the rope jam's. The port line actually goes through the boom and comes out of the center roller (it is also becomes wire at this point) and is used as the outhall. The other line stays on the starboard side and connects to the topping lift. At the bottom of the boom near the gooseneck there's a cleat.

So it seems as if my boom can have three lines going through it, the port and starboard lines have rope jam's and I assume the centerline should go to the cleat under the boom.

I would like at least one reefing line so would appreciate any advice of how I should reconfigure things.

Thanks,

Warren.

thanks for the great picture.

so the outhall wouldn't use the rope jams at the gooseneck end.

Also how do i go about running a new line through the boom.

The main sail out-haul does lead forward through the boom and exits through the center jam.

The easiest method to drop a line through the boom is to remove both end caps. You may be able to use an electrician's wire fishing spool to pull a light messenger line, and then use that line to pull the actual line if the electrician's tool end will fit through the end caps.

Sounds like you have the same Kenyon Spars on your 25.5 that I have on mine. Here's how I have mine rigged.

The outhaul exits at the bottom of the gooseneck, goes aft and is cleated on the underside of the boom. I achieve 4:1 purchase inside the boom with two fiddle blocks. The outhaul that exits at the clew end of the boom is wire rope ... and it fastens directly to the clew of the main.

The two levered clutches (port and starboard) at the gooseneck may have originally been for reefing lines for first and second reef points. Regardless, I have only one reef point so I use the starboard cleat for the reef line ... and the port one for the toping lift.

But I suggest that you may want to consider rigging the topping lift and reefing line slightly different from the diagram supplied by cephius(Dave).
Here's why:

1. On a Hunter 25.5 there is no need for 2:1 purchase on the topping lift. Thus, there is no need to dead end the topping lift. Simple connect the line that exits the aft end of the boom to the topping lift.

2. And likewise, there is no need to add hardware to the boom to dead end the reef line. If the main is loose footed you can simply run the reef line thru the clew of the main, go down and tie a bowline around the boom. If there's a bolt rope on the foot of the main, you can run the reef line thru the clew, down, around the boom and back up to the clew.

Here's a link t a YouTube video from Doyle Sailmakers that goes into this in a bit more detail.

I find that the 25.5 likes to be reefed early ... so for me it's important that the reefing gear work ... because I find that I use it often.

To run new line(s) thru the boom you'd need to take the ends off the boom. And obviously you'll have to be careful to avoid tangling the three lines, the fiddles blocks and the thru-bolt that fastens bail for the mainsheet fiddle block.

Thank you so much.

I think I have a good understanding now. However, I have one more question. Would you untie the reef line which goes around the boom if you weren't reefed or could you just loosen the line?

Thanks,

Warren.
