I found out some information I thought might interest other 2005/2006 Hunter 25 owners. The Hunter 25's were built in Maryland until about Hull number 170 according to the customer service representative I spoke to. The numbers started at Hull 100 so this is actually around hull 70 (he didn't give an exact hull number). I am purchasing Hull 103, that means it would be the 3rd one built! I can't believe the dealer has had it so long unsold but that is the case. I'm getting a good deal but if price were the same I would probably look for a 2006 model versus the 2005. I'm getting enough of a discount to be okay with a 2005 model. Mine will have the curtain instead of the door on the head but not much else as changed from what I can tell. I also asked about the rudder not coming up higher, he said it was designed for the rudder to be kept in the water and was not supposed to come all the way out. I also asked about the hull to deck joint, he had to check on this, he said there had been 2 or 3 boat that had needed repairs for leaks on the hull to deck joint but that it was not an overall problem and that any fix would be evaluated on an as needed basis and would be covered for 1 year under the warranty. It would be interesting to know others hull numbers, post them here if you like! Thanks- Scott

Mine is #153

Mine is #153 and a 2006 model. The head on my boat has the hard door. With the size of the head, you may find the curtain to be better than having a hard door.

Hull 118

Scott, My hull is 118, or the 18th built. I have a solid door and this boat was purchased at a boat show in April 2005. It would be easy to add an enclosure. The head is too small anyway. I don't think you have ot worry about the hull leaks or the rudder. If you want to modify it, it is easy. Go for it, it is a great boat. Solid keel, no centerboard or water ballast tanks to worry about.

Thanks Barry, the solid keel and lack of centerboard/water ballast were big selling points for me since I will keep it in the water. I also considered the Catalina 250, but the wing keel is too deep where I sail and I didn't want the potential issues of the water ballast version plus when you drop the keel it would be too deep. The Hunter 25 just seems like a great all around boat that fits my needs perfectly. I just want to bring it home! I should get my test sail in this weekend and have her home by monday.

Hunter 25 - Rudder and Hull/Deck Join

I imported my new Hunter 25 in mid-2005 ("MaryHel"). She has hull number 126. I have had the rudder mounting modified because it broke repeatedly while the boat was on her swing mooring. Now that the rudder can be hinged out of the water, I have no problem at all in this regard. (The simple modification could only be effected because I opted for a wheel - if the boat you're looking at has only a tiller, seek further advice. Don't put your boat on a mooring and leave the rudder in the water). A small leak (which I luckily noticed and reported to the dealer) gradually became a big one. The hull and deck moulds were not stuck together properly in the factory and I have had much of the glue ground out and replaced and the moulds bolted together every 8" or so all round. The bolts are covered by the rubber bumper strip, so she looks fine. (Be careful about only a one-year warranty - it can take a fair bit of bouncing about in rough water before the leaking becomes significant. You should make sure the potential problem is acknowledged in writing and there is reasonable warranty period). These things were a bit of a nuisance, but Hunter have been very good, covering all the work under warranty. (I'm supplying below a link to archived posts that I've contributed). The head is certainly squeezy, but what do you expect in a 25' boat? (The MaryHel has a door - I recommend you hold out for one). I am very happy with her. The 2005/2006 Hunter 25 still stands out as superior in its class (ie "pocket cruiser") and is great fun to sail. It's summer time here in Australia and Port Phillip Bay is a terrific sailing area.

Question for Garry

Can you share with us the details of your rudder mount modification? A photo would be great as well.

Another request from Gary

Hi Garry, A picture or description of this modification would be great. My 2007 is a moored boat and I have been fighting with all sorts of issues. Here on Cape Cod dockage is impossible to find so a mooring is my only choice. I love this boat but if I cant solve the mooring and rudder issues I will have to trade it in for a Catalina 25. Thanks in advance for any help.

Rudder woes

I wouldn't trade in on a Catalina 250 as it is known to have issues with it's kick up rudder, the 3rd generation rudder is supposed to be better, unfortunately they fixed it my not allowing it to kick up at all and changed it to a fixed rudder. You did say Catalina 25 so you may be talking about older ones. I am sure it can be fixed as I've seen posts on it in my research on the hunter 25, just no specifics on how to correct it. Does anyone know Garry's email address? He probably hasn't seen these posts yet.

Not sure which number is ours, yet!

So Garry, Could you post a pick of your modified rudder for us? Our boat has a wheel and I am definitely interested in getting the rudder up out of the water when not in use. I am disappointed in the setup of the rudder. Granted we bent the rudder arms one time by nearly running aground sideways, but the rudder has ALWAYS jiggled around far too much for my liking. It also makes it difficult to track straight. . . but I digress. Pictures then?
