We are in the process of purchasing a new Hunter 25. It's a 2005 model that has been at the dealers for a while, it has all options except the companionway cover. I am wondering if anyone has any hints on where to install a VHF / Radio/CD player, etc. I would also be interested in installing electronics at the steering pedestal. I want things to be as out of the way as possible and all the wiring to be hidden. Is it a challenge to get everything cleanly to the breaker panel? Thanks, we look forward to being Hunter 25 owners in about a week!

Scott, My 2005 Hunter 25, which I bought used, has a radio enclosure which mounts (hangs) in the cabin on the starbard side, below the electrical panel. It is called a Stereo Weather Enclosure in the Westmarine catalog. It is out of the way and you don't have to cut holes in your boat. Just like Jeff, I have a wired remote mounted starboard on the transom. I use the radio mainly at the dock. Also, I have Sirius satellite radio and very rarely use the remote to channel surf while sailing. It came with the boat. I have a portable VHF, so I am not much help here. I don't see a need for a 25 watt fixed mount VHF. I would never venture out of site of land with this boat. If you are planning to do this, the Hunter 25 is not the boat for you. Move up to a larger boat.

Wiring to Panel

Thank you both for the great information and the picture! I will not be venturing far from shore so perhaps the handheld VHF will be fine, I already have a couple of them. What is the typical range with a handheld? I have an EPIRB so I probably don't need to be too concerned about a fixed mount GPS. I'm glad to hear it is so easy to get through the pedestal. I am less sure about routing to the panel. I don't have the boat yet so I am sure this will be simpler when I can look at it more easily. Is there a lot of space between the liner and the deck? For example, in your post where the stereo is mounted in the galley cabinet, what is the route that your wiring runs to get to the panel? Also, what type of antenna did you use for the stereo and where did you run it? Thanks for the help, I want my installations to look as clean as possible and will carefully think through everything before I start cutting holes. I'd also be interested in speaker placement recommendations for the both the cockpit and cabin.

My wiring

My stereo wiring goes down from the stereo and then runs under the floor of the boat. You could put it behind the liner in the ceiling, but for the run from the cabinet to the liner, you would have to go behind the carpet, and that is glued to the hull. As for an antenna, I don't have one, since I just use an IPOD connected to my stereo. On my old boat I just used one of those short rubber car mount antennas mounted on the inside of of the boat on the top of the cabinet. That worked fine.

Where are your speakers

I'd still be interested in knowing where Hunter 25 owners are placing the speakers- both in the cockpit and cabin. Pictures and type of speakers appreciated as well if you have them. Thanks!

Speakers in a 25

Scott, I don't have pics right now of the speakers but I can tell you where mine are. I mounted Bose 151SE speakers in my boat. They are very good quality and can be heard in the cockpit even with the outboard running. Both of mine are mounted on the head enclosure (through-bolted with stainless machine screws and nuts). One is mounted just as you step into the cabin on the wall of the head that faces the sink. The other is mounted facing the v-berth on the wall of the head enclosure facing the v-berth. This is obviously not the best place as far as stereo sound and separation goes, but the boat is small and it all sounds very good. I also plan to mount two smaller waterproof speakers hanging under the stern rail seats. I just have not yet found the right speakers for that. I want to be able to rotate those to face the bow of the boat while sailing and then to rotate to the stern so that they can be heard while swimming off the back of the boat.

Speakers

Navpods makes some that look like they would be perfect under the aft seats, they don't swivel though. I think I saw them for around $190 on one site but they retail over $300. I believe they use poly-planar speakers in them. Those prices are per pair. Thanks for the info on your current location, the options in the cabin are definitely limited. I thought about putting them under the v-berth or settees but I am worried about sound quality and having them kicked when moving around. Scott
