Going to look at a '87 23 Hunter. Roller furling jib, new sails, galv trailer, VHF and depth, 6hp Johnson- primarily fresh water, some salt use recently- overall labeled "exceptional condition". Asking $5k. Understand it was stored for 4 years or so also. Any thoughts or things to look for are appreciated.

I had a 1988
it was a fine little boat. I kept mine in the water at a slip, but the trailer sounds okay. I took the mast down once and was glad it wasn't something I had to do more often, but there are ways to make it easier. It was a nice daysailor, a bit cramped for overnighters and no way a coastal cruiser. My wife made me sell it for something bigger because it rocked around a lot and she got seasick. Just know that it is what it is and no more and you'll enjoy it. The price is about average so if you aren't really sure, look around somemore... Ron

I have an '87 H23 and love it. The '87 has the Z spar mast which is a bit lighter and easier to step than the big white Kenyon mast. Look around the interior for leakage signs around the chain plates. Check over the hull for cracks or signs of fiberglass repair. We have a fleet of 7 at our club and everybody loves them. Excellent boat for inland lakes. The price sounds right to me if it's in pretty good shape. I gave more for mine but it had a brand new mainsail. If the boat is in good shape, that is an excellent price. You asked what to look for. Here it goes. Regarding wire rigging, make sure there are no breaks in the wires and check the studs. Also, is the wire stretched to the point that it can no longer be tuned. Look at the mast to make sure there is no damage. As for the boat, make sure it does not leak and if it does, make sure there is no damage as a result. The chain plates should probably need to be recaulked where the shrouds are attached to the boat whihc is only a cover plate held in place by four screws. Check hull and deck for and breaks and so forth with attention to keel where it is attached to the boat. As for the motor, running it will tell you alot. There is alot to tell you but maybe a good sailor locally who knows boats should go with you to look at the boat. If the trailer is a Kens welding or KWS, check the fender attachments, bearings in the axle and the board which the keel rests on. Crazy Dave Condon

Dave: Last October we purchased a 1986 H23. Original sails, Johnson 9.9, std. jib, trailer. Good condition - cushions and interior like new. We paid $3,500 for it. Had a much higher asking price but it never sold... This price seems very fair(provided it really is exceptional condition)There are some very good books out there about buying used boats... new sails would cost close to $1,000 or more... Went and looked...
Went Sat 9/21 to look at boat - over all pretty clean- couple dings on hull worth having prof. repaired. Interior was clean- no signs of leaks- one cushion aft was in need of recovering. Comes with an '88 6 hp Johnson- engine exterior and powerhead looks great for year. Wing keel was straight with minimal rust- appears never to have been filled or hit. Trailer overall in good shape- very little rust (axle is pretty bad though)- looks like it had retrieval guides at one point. Nice feature was extendable tongue to 6'. Has a newer main sail- original main sail and roller jib sail- all appear clean and crisp. Otherwise just some cosmetic work (teak and bottom paint needed). Going to think about it this week. Also any one know if the aft cockpit seats (on railings) can be added to this boat? It currently does not have any stern railing. Cost also? Any other thoughts are still appreciated- and thanks to those that have responsed !!

I would suggest that you try the HOW chandlrey and maybe Phil Herring can come up with one as they were made in the past. I have forgotten where I use to get them from. IF the chandlrey cannot help you, try RailMakers and if no dice, call Hunter and ask for Mike Thomas extension 3015 and he might be able to send you in the right direction. Crazy Dave Condon

Don't know what everyone else thinks about stern rail seats. My boat sails much better when I send bodies to the bow of my 1986. Better balance, less drag, etc. Three adults in the cockpit puts too much stern in the water. I surely wouldn't want more weight hanging on/over the stern rail unless it was a couple 40lb kids and that's probably not the safest place for them. Any thoughts???
