I have recently purchased a 1988 Hunter 23, and am wondering if any others can give me tips on how to tune the standing rigging? I will be using it for cruising, and for PHRF racing here. I have a Loos gauge, understand getting mast straight, but don't know where to start for rake, shroud tension, etc. ANy help would be appreciated.

Tuning Info Resources

Best info on tuning is Brion Toss's video "Tuning Your Rig" available at www.Briontoss.com "Illustrated Sail and Rig Tuning," by Ivar Dedekam is also helpful, currently available at Amazon.com. I also did a lot of research and wrote it up regarding tuning my H30. Check the archives.

Forestay, backstay, and shrouds to 600 lbs

Dean: Hunter Marine recommends 20% of breaking strength for shrouds, forestay, and backstay. With 5/32 inch wire rope with a breaking strength of 3300 lbs., that works out to 600 lbs. which is also the figure given to me by Hunter Marine for a Hunter 23 with a Kenyon mast. To be sure for your own boat, send a technical query to Hunter Marine. Let me know if they say any different! - Kevin
