Good Morning. We just purchased a 1985 Hunter 23 (centerboard model). We were wondering if anyone has ever removed the carpeting in the cabin. I really hate it and would prefer to just have fiberglass which I could then paint. I would also be able to work on the wiring, etc. more easily. If you have removed the carpeting, do you have any suggestions and were there any problems encountered. Thank you.

I had a 89 23 for about 15 years, great boat for us . I did not ever remove the carpeting but it was stained in several places when we got it and it cleaned up nicely with some spray bathroom cleaner with bleach . I think you would find it a pretty unfinished look if you did decide to remove it . In a couple of spots where the carpet came loose I had to reglue it and what was underneath was on the rough side if I recall . Also if I recall there were only a very few 23s with centerboard so you have an unusual boat . I did see one at a regatta some years ago . I realize I did not answer your question but decided to answer as no one else had responded . If you want to tear it out I would start someplace that is not real visible so if you decide it is not what you want it is not in the main area . Good luck and congratulations on your new boat .We had 15 great years with ours .

I was thinking about your question yesterday whilst working under the cockpit routing my solar power wires. I took the opportunity to pull back a little of the carpet. I found a rough surface. When I bought my boat used, I used a household carpet extractor cleaner with a mild solution of oxiclean. Worked miracles. Did it in the summer, left the hatch covers open all day. Carpet dried out in no time. Boat smells clean. I do however recommend rinsing multiple times.

Hi, I have removed some very small sections to install backing plates for blocks and winches. I recall it was glued very well, and quite a mess after pulling off the carpet. As I was covering it with metal, I left the glue mess. Perhaps some acetone or other solvent may remove it? I think the idea of cleaning the carpet with oxi-clean and a wet/dry shop vac would be a lot less work. But good luck.

Removed the carpet on my boat and replaced it with tongue and grove bamboo flooring from Home Depot. Removing the carpet is a nasty job and the underneath surface is not good enough to paint. When it was done the project is one of the best improvements made on the boat. Good Luck.

I replaced the carpet in the v-berth with planks i made from luan plywood. I had stained it with "red oak" stain that matched the compression post well. I put 3-4 coats of polyurethane on all sides. The edges were sanded and rounded over. I glued it in place on the rough inside of the hull with liquid nails. It's been up for about 10 years and is beginning to show some wear. If i had to do again, i would consider vinyl planking, or a solid wood like the bamboo flooring mentioned before.

I have several boxes of vinyl planking waiting to be installed in my kitchen if you want some practice . I have thought it would be an ideal way to finish the inside of some of these boats . I am going to do the floor with whats left over from the kitchen and if I like it go from there . It is a very durable product . Looks good/ almost made for the inside of a boat .

I was wondering if you could post a picture of your boat with the flooring in it - where you replaced the carpet.

I hope this link will work. The job is posted in the modification section for Hunter 33 older models.

I laid it up without glue so that it could be removed later. The boards are held in with border molding (quarter round fake mahogany). This year I removed and replaced some that were water damaged. The replacement was easy as I was able to use the first boards as patterns for the new ones.
