I am considering the purchase of an 8 hp 4-stroke outboard. Will I need to add any reinforcement to the transom?

motor

You will be fine to add the 8 hp four stroke motor. IF the bracket is made of wood, first sand and then varnish it first. Make sure there is an indentation on the forward side of the bracket that will keep the tightening screws from coming off the brackett.

Me Too!!!.

I too have a h23 and am considering a bigger motor. Boat still has the original Nissan 5hp. The other person responding is not familiar with the Hunter 23's fiberglass motor mount. I too would be worried about the added weight as the mount seems a little shaky with my small 5hp. Good Luck and let me know what happens. Dave L.

Mine is still on

Mike ,I have a h23 that I just put a Honda 9.9 extended shaft motor on. I did not make any modifications to the mount and it rides fine, the fiberglass mount does have alot of movement so I do plan to reinforce it at the end of the season. Also the tiller arm is longer on the Honda motor so it does hit the transom during turning (extend mount further out to solve this). I did put safety cable and chain from motor to boat just in case. My advice is to get off the computer and go get the motor now, you will love it (just don't let the wife know what it cost). GOOD LUCK

New Bracket

I replaced my factory mount with one made of stainless steel. I extended it aft far enough that the control arm on the motor did not hit the stern of my boat. The factory mount had cracked on my boat and I was afraid of the weight. New mount easy to make and easy to install

out motor bracket

I just added a 4 stroke 15 hp to my boat. I wanted power for ICW cruising. I replaced the original outboard bracket with a lift & lower type bracket (Garelick). Now the engine does not drag in the water on a port tack. I cut two plates of 1/4 inch aulminum 18x18, used SS bolts and 3M 5200 sealeant. One inside and the other outside then mounted the lift bracket thru both plates. I little overkill; however, works great.
