I see where on the newer water ballasted Hunter 23-23.5 models, Hunter has employed 2 "guy wires" on each side of the mast when raising and lowering to solve the problem of the mast falling to one side or another as it's being stepped or de-stepped. Hunter marine says today that my older (1987 model) never had a mast raising/lowering guide system designed for it like the new ones have and that I should post this question on the Hunter Owners Webpage to see if anyone out there has found a cure. Any suggestions that would avoid my mast from crashing to the ground every year and having to replace windex, radio antennas and all? Our yacht cartage service simply says "let us do it". Pay us now or pay us later, but it sure would be neat to be able to do it ourselves and trailer the boat to far cruising grounds and solve this problem... Any crafty thoughts out there would be greatly appreciated.!! Doug Schroeder dsailor55@msn.com

Stepping a 23 Hunter

I use a system whereby I put the mainsheet with pulleys connect to fore stay to raise the mast. Very simple and easy. If you want more info please contact me at searay0301@aol.com I will send you a picture of setup

another varient

i just finished making a mast raising system similer to the one pictired. i don't have any pics yet but would be glad to get you some if you send me an e mail to: williamrd@attglobal.net. i used 1"x2"x8' oak pieces teak stained and stowable on the stanctions. for the coller i split a 6" piece of pvc and hinged it so i could spread it around the mast and then pin the hinges with a single brass long pin. haven't tried it yet but its the same principle as the others except i was thinking of belaying to the next 2 stanctions forward with the oak.....(i'll have to experiment a little here.....hadn't thought of attaching their bases to the aft stanctions) i drilled, tapped, and epoxied ss screw eyes into the ends of the oak and have small ss snaplinks to attach to the stanction bases and the coller. i intend to use the mainsheet to the jib halyard to pull the mast up. btw, i just picked-up some new foot pins yesterday too that i had made with loops in the ends so i can belay either a pully , (some versatility), or get a finger in the loop to pull them back out when the time comes.....i've had to pound them out before! (i also had a taller, extendable mast crutch built)
