Can anyone tell me what lines are what in the hunter 23 boom. I have one line on the starboard side coming out through the cam in the gooseneck which exits the aft end of the boom and is just loose there, I think this is the flattening reef?

One line from the port side cam lock at the gooseneck which is the topping lift.

One line exits the center of the gooseneck and has no cam, it apparently goes to a small cleat on the underside of the boom. This one exits the aft end of the boom as a cable and has a small shackle attached. I believe this to be the outhaul. Problem is, I can not pull it through the boom from the front far enough, it leaves about a foot of cable out of the aft of the boom but 'stops' hard at that point.

Do I have this right and there is some problem in the boom keeping the outhaul from snugging up, or what do I have wrong?

I believe my rig is the Kenyon.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

your boom rigging

it sounds like we have the same setup. I have a 23.5 the line on the port side is the topping lift. Center is outhaul and starboard is the reefing line. From your description I believe the center cam is broken/missing, ergo the cleat on the bottom of the boom. You might try attaching a new outhaul line to the end of the old near the mast and pulling it through from the aft end of the boom....

You did not mention which boom, however if it is the Z-spar Z-160 it is set up as follows port to starboard (though I see no reason why this couldnt be reversed), Topping lift, outhaul, single line reefing. On the original set up there should be cam cleats on the casting (at the gooseneck end) for each line just underneath the sheaves.

Here is the rigging diagram for the H23 boom that I obtained from the factory (topping lift is not shown):

Thanks to all for the help. It appears that mine is rigged correctly but there is something stopping the outhaul from pulling far enough forward to pull the sail tight. I will have to take the boom off and see what the issue is. Thanks again to all for the insight and the pictures.

I have the simimilar boom arrangement but took a different approach. I used the center pully for the outhaul and ran that to the forward cleat. I use one of the locking cams for the reefing line. The other locking cam is unused, but i could add a second reef line to the sail at some time. For a toping lift I added a locking beener and block with a V-jam to the back of the boom and connected that to the toppping lift. It seems to work for now.
