I'm looking to mount a Raymarine ST-40 Bi-Data speed and depth instrument on my Hunter 23.5 using the thru-hull transducers. I'm not sure where I can go through the hull without hitting the water tank. We just got this boat and any guidance would be very appreciated. Thanks.

I have a '91 23.5 and a depth sounder transducer is mounted under the bilge area access board in the center-rear. This is behind the ballast tank because I have a knotmeter thru-hull at the same location. The hull is thick and you should make sure yours will penetrate before you seat it. I had read somewhere, possibly these pages some 10 years ago, that you can place it on a ziplock bag full of water and no air pockets. The bag of water will make a solid connection to the hull and allow the transducer to function. You can move the transducer and bag around until you find a suitable spot on the hull.

I put a transducer in a coffee can full of water till I could pull the boat out. It worked just fine.I didn't have the nerve to replace the bad transducer while it was still in the water.

On our 240 I installed my ST40 bi-data transducers under the rear birth, right next to the bilge pump. And yes, i drilled holes in my hull to get better reception for the depth meter. Used the right sealer, 5200, and have had zero problems. Good Luck with the new vessel!

Thanks! Looks like the rear bilge area is it. Where did you mount the indicator? Did you use an external bracket?

I mounted the display unit on the starboard bulkhead next to the hatchway. This required a hole in the inner panel also but a nice decorative clock will hide it easy.
