I know nothing about sail boats, and have just purchased a 1994 23.5. Can someone tell me if normal stainless steel bolts can be used as pintles? I don't see any reason why they can not. Secondly, I have ordered an original owners manual from Hunter, but I would like to know how the center board lowers. I still have the boat on the trailer, I am just curious.

Lowering the centerboard

On the starboard side of the cabin top there's a heavy line that comes from the base of the mast, through the deck orgainzer (turning blocks) back towards the cockpit. It should have one or two blocks (pullies) in it to give some mechanical advantage. It terminates in a V-shaped jam cleat (not the two clutches that have levers). Once in deep enough water, you just pull the line out of the cleat and lower it gently down as far as it goes. If you lower it _slightly_ less than gently, you'll hear and feel a reassuring clunk as it goes down as far as it goes. It just lifts up by hand (no winching). It's not very heavy. When you launch, put the centerboard down sooner rather than later if you need to motor and steer around a marina. With the board down, the boat will spin on a dime. Without it, it's like a dog on a skating rink, especially on a windy day. I have no answer about the pintle without looking at a boat to remind myself what it looks like. There are some West Marine stores in the Dallas area (Garland and Lake Worth) where you might find proper parts. Rick

Pintles

Judging how the threads on the bolt through the tiller wallowed out the hole I would suggest something other than a stainless bolt as a pintle. The same thing may happen there wearing out the gudgeon. I'd try ordering the original part from Hunter.

by hand?

just curious if anyone else can raise the centerboard on their 23.5 by hand. on our boat, we can get the board up maybe halfway by hand but it's a heavy board, and have to use the winch to pull it all the way. thanks, ed

Use the winch

I have the same experience with raising the centerboard as Ed Allen. It is heavy and halfway is about all I get by hand then I use the winch. Reaching back to pull the rudder up isn't all that easy either.
