Hunter 23.5 Lake Clark
Just bought my first sailboat, 1995 Hunter 23.5, quite a learning experience so far. I'm in the process of replacing/adding some things. Does anyone know what size bimini works best on this boat. I do not have side railings on this boat, and there are already attachemnts on the outside of the coaming (sp?).

Second question, the boat has anti fouling paint on the bottom, which was not put on very well. My plans are to use this boat in fresh water, or day sails in the Chesapeake. Would it be wise to sand the bottom, paint with gloss white marine paint, and add a stripe to separate the 2 white colors?

Thanks for your advice!

I sold my 23.5 boat 2 years ago. loved it. was time to move up. I have an excellent set of Kevlar sails that the new owner did not want. I used them maybe 6 times. Interested? tedsailing@aol.com

Possibly, do you have pictures of them?
Full battens, or partial?
How many reefing points?

Go to Ameriseam for you bimini. They have them made for your model boat. Much less expensive than getting one custom made.

Concerning your antifouling bottom paint.... will your boat be trailered between sails, or kept in a wet slip? For your daysails on the Chesapeake, how long will it stay in the water at a single time? Maybe a different answer, depending on your your practice. Do you know what type of antifouling is on the bottom now (ablative, etc)? BrianW

The boat will be trailered between sails. When at the Chesapeake it will usually be day sailed and taken back home or kept in a drydock area. On very rare occasions I might spend the night on the boat. I have no clue what bottom paint it is. The marina sold the boat on consignment, may try to reach the owner if it is neccessary to know what type of anti fouling paint is on it. If sanding it off, is the type of paint as crucial? Not sure how difficult that would be to do either?

My Time;

The bimini you bought from this site is made by Ameriseam and they do have the patterns as I made sure of that. I introduce Ameriseam to Hunter well over the years and they make excellent products for the boats to include mainsail covers, biminis, camper tops and so forth. Go thru this website but do specify the year and model as some of the water ballast boats are differnet models and some had changes which is why I suggest specifying the year.

If you are daysailing with an occasional overnighter, do not paint the bottom of the boat as it is not needed. If your boat is in the water for a week, you will be fine. If emersing into the Cheasapeak Bay, I still suggest that you rinse off the boat and trailer and do flush the engine from time to time with fresh water. The engine can be done atg home with a motor flush attachment and hose. However, if you put the engine into reverse or forward, please make sure that no one is around the turning prop as one can be seriously injured. Children is one main concern wnhen doing that one.

If you are going to bottom paint, there are various kinds. What I use to tell my customers if leaving in the water but taking out for the winter for example if the boat is on an inland lake say in PA, then use a paint that will not loose it's effectiveness which is a softer paint but suggested for traileralbe to include Micron CSC or West Marine CCP.
Like I said, if trailering alot with the boat sitting on the trailer, then no paint is needed.

If you trailer your boat to the Great Lakes and then back to an inland lake down south, make sure you wash off the hull, trailer and engine well as your neighbors would appreciate that. We do not want Zebra Muscles to hitch hike on your boat into fresh water lakes. Going into salt water, that will kill them buggers.
