Alas, poor Meva, my 1993 H23.5's water ballast tank leaked into the core and she is unfit to sail with cracks in her hull and rotted core. All the rest of her topside is in great condition. I priced out a repair and was quoted around 20K, which makes sense because her whole core and hull would have to be replaced plus find and repair the leak in the ballast tank. Hence my question: Does anyone have an idea where I may begin to search for an H23.5 with a good hull but with unrepairable issues with the topside? Thought a splice might make a good boat out of two bad ones.

I just do not know where to start.

Thanks for your help.

My opinion - buy a new boat. It is not worth the trouble. You can get something bigger with that amount of money.
Good luck.

Sounds a bit strange to me, I would get another opinion. Have a registered surveyor go over it. I do not think there is any coring in those hulls.

Ditto.... Use it as an opportunity (unexpected) to get a new Boat!;)

Trying to "Splice boats", I would think would be WAAAAAY more trouble than it is worth.

I have replaced Meva with Perception, an '03 H240. I really want to do the repair for the learning experience and challenge. It would be fun to spend dark winter days trying to piece together a vessel in my shed.

Charlie13958, I was present when my marina's fiberglass technician ground three exploratory holes in the hull. All three showed rotted, saturated balsa core. It was the same opinion that the contract marine surveyor gave USAA Insurance co. Why Hunter used balsa wood below the water line is beyond me.

Any ideas to start hunting for a salvage vessel?

Happy Sailing!

ok now I'm concerned I have a 1993 also and have had no signs of water leaking so how did you start to assume you even had a problem and where did they drill your boat to determine how bad things really were? anyone else ever has this happen ???

Dear Scott,

Hi,
I have a hull with no mast! I came on this site lookiing for the specifications for the mast for this boat. First of all do you have the original specs? I'm in a lawsuit against a crooked boat seller who buys broken boats and pieces them together to vulnerable buyers like me - a single mom who didn't know a lot about sailing at the time.
Hence, I bought a hunter 23 1987 boat with a cape dory typhoon weekender mast. A boat rigger at my marina and a dozen other people told me that the two do not go together.
I am in a lawsuit with the man. I won in small claims court representing myself. His attorney was angry that I won and appealed. I now have to go to superior court and fight the same battle. It is clear as day that the two do not go together. But I need clear proof now.
Therefore, Does anyone have the oriiginal specs for the Hunter 23 1987 sailboat?

Lets talk after my case is over this month about what to do with your boat parts and mine! I have a great hull but no mast!

Thank you to anyone who can help me.
Teresa

Hi "Bad",

During the summer of 2008, I discovered a leak, but couldn't find the source. It was very small but noticeable, (about a gallon or so in the bilge every week to two weeks). In the fall of 2008, I pulled the boat out of the water and noticed a crack in the aft starboard hull, below the water line. The crack was parallel to the trailer bunk and quite significant. Hauled the boat to a sailboat repair shop where they let it sit over the winter (since it's hard to sail in Minnesota when the water is really hard). It was in the spring where the fiberglass technician started grinding around the crack to fix it that we discovered the saturated, rotted core. We then ground about a foot away and found the same thing. A sounding revealed the entire hull as saturated.

Since there was no apparent damage to the outer hull, the marina diagnosed the problem as a leaking water ballast tank and subsequent saturation of the core. The repair does not make sense because it would cost me over twice that of purchasing a comparable boat. Besides, the act of finding a leak in the water ballast tank is challenging and there are no guarantees that the leak they find is the only leak.

I took the boat to USAA insurance company and they would not cover, saying it was due to "wear and tear" and not an accident. I appealed to the company but lost.

Happy Sailing
Scott

Hello Teresa,

I am sorry that you experience a crooked deal. From the Hunterowners.com site, your boat specs are:

Hunter
I 26'
J 8'6 in
P 25' 8 in
E 9'9 in

loa 23' 3 in
hull_speed 5.9
dis_len_ratio T
sail_area 235.5 sq ft
capsize 2.37
years_prod 1987 -
lwl 19' 7 in
beam 8'
draft 2' 3 in
displacement 2450 lbs
ballast 800 lbs
mast_height 33'
water_tanks 6 gal
fuel_tanks NA
aux_hp OB
keel_material cast iron

Best of luck in your appeal defense!

I suspect the h23 and h23.5 huls are not compatible. If I can not find an h23.5 hull, perhaps it is time to make Meva an organ donor and part her out. I would love the conversation when the time is right for you.

Happy sailing,
Scott

Hull fine, rest needed

Hi Scott:

I hope this message finds it's way to you. The last I heard you had a hull rotten to the core and I was wondering if you solved your delima. I have a hunter 23.5 1993 that is everything except the mast, boom, rigging and motor.

Did you solve your problem with your hunter hull needs, would you like mine or would you be interested in selling the rest of your hunter parts?

Thanks, Shannon
