I have just bought my first trailer sailer and need some advice. The rudder tiller unit attaches to the boat by slipping over 2 spigots. Is there supposed to be a clamp that stops the unit comming off in a rough sea. There are no holes in the spigot post for a split pin. Thanks, Rod

Mine Too

I just bought my 1984 Hunter22 three weeks ago and it also doesn't have anyway to hold the rudder on securely. I guess it comes that way. I'll probably mount some kind of device to make it more secure. I hope to have my boat on the water in a few weeks, so I let you know how the rudder handles in water. Good luck

should be a cotter pin hole

on the top "spigot" (pintle?) that's attached to the stern there should be a small hole drilled through that will accept a cotter pin which prevents the rudder housing from coming up and off (I have an '82 model H22)

SS catch

Mine has a stainless L shaped catch that swings out of the way by the top of the rudder mount. It's screwed or bolted in. I like the idea of the cotter pin though as well. I believe that's what my fathers Cat22 had.

Rudder attachment

My 1983 H22 is the same- no cotter pin hole on the pintle-I was glad to see your posts. The lack of a cotter pin sort of mystified me too. So far I haven't had any problems with it though.

rudder attachment

i have an '81 that has the previously mentioned s/s L bracket. works well - simple - very secure. i can remove install rudder in less than 1 minute.

rudder pin

AFAIK, the rudder won't come loose while sailing. I've had my H22 in some fairly ridiculous conditions, as well as leaving her on a very rough mooring for months at a time. The rudder has never shown any inclination to move off it's pintles. IIRC, my rudder has a lip on it that limits vertical movement while it's locked down- that is, it can't come off the pintles unless the rudder is in the kicked up position. Rudder safeties are usually the stuff of dinghys and racing boats- ie. to prevent the loss of the rudder in the event of a capsize.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies. I've gone for the cotter pin fix. I've drilled a small hole in the top pintle and used a stainless washer and pin, its not going anywhere.

Need some info

I just acquired a 1981 Hunter22 which drifted off it's mooring and ended up on the rocks. Small rip in the hull which should prove easy to fix but it lost it's rudder in the process. Anyone have ideas as to where to start looking for a used one? Any help would be appreciated.
