Hunter 22 original battery location?

I recently purchased a Hunter 22, the battery is mounted in the starboard hatch next to the fuel tank. This seems dangerous to me. What was the original location?

My 81 Hunter 22 has it's battery located in the deep recess under the sink, just forward of the fresh water tank. It used to slide around a little so I locked it in place with some high density foam.

Battery location and hold-down

I Have a '82 H22, my battery is in the original location, deep in front of the water tank as Chuck's is, but with a hold-down strap secured by a bracket screwed into the fiberglass flooring, and of course in a battery box. Very secure. I have run two leads (+and-wires) from the battery terminals up to a more accessible spot for clipping on a charger, as the location back under the sink is difficult to get to for charging a few times a season.
