Hello I am a cadet at The Citadel and I've been volunteering time with another forum member here and one of my classmates down at the Citadel Boating center, right now we're in the process of restoring the school's Hunter 22 which has been neglected for the last few years and we're in the process of putting some life back into the boat. Well when we got to it, there was about a foot of water inside the hull and understandably some of the woodwork on the inside was rotted out and needs replacing, but with the tools and supplies we have already here at the center that isn't a problem. What was ruined that we do not have readily available was the electrical switchboard and the cushions, or at least the covers to the cushions. First, about how much would it be to replace the cushion covers and a new switchboard roughly? We aren't looking for anything incredibly fancy or decorative for the seats and cushions and/or covers, more important to us is functionality and durablity for a lower price than anything really. Second, about how much water does it take to launch the hunter 22 from its trailer. At the house here the tides make the difference in when we launch and can't. At low tide you could walk the 200 yards from the dock to the ashely and not get your feet wet, so about how much water does it take to float the boat up and off the trailer? On a good day we can get up to a 6 foot tide but more common is the 5 to 5 1/2 foot tide around here. Finally on the back of the boat is a mount for a small outboard. Currently, we have several different outboards which we can use ranging from 6 to 15 HP, so the other question is about how much power is necessary or required to move a boat the size of the Hunter 22 and is an extended shaft on an outboard really necessary? Thanks for reading this far and any advice into this would be most appreciated.

Chas; Cushions would be several hundred dollars, maybe $500-800. Switch board....4-6 gang $30. Write if I may help..Seth

Motor size?

Most people would not put a 15 hp on your 22. Long shaft is a go. A 6 hp will push your boat. Sounds like you have some pretty strong currents with your tide range try something suitable to the quality of the motor mount to your transom.

Depth

The depth will depend on which style you have (swing keel, fin keel, or centerboard). I have a swing keel that draws around 23 inches of water unloaded. Throw a couple people and some gear on there and it will probably add an inch or two of draft. Your five and a half feet of water will be plenty. Just remember to set up your return time so you dont get stuck in the mud at sunset when you go back to the dock. For engines, I wouldn't go any larger than an 8 horse, especially if it's a four stroke. Four strokes are a bit heavier and can change the characteristics of your boat. Many people say they have great luck with a smaller motor. I live in Portland, ME where the tides are quite strong, and I have a 23 year old 7.5 horse 2 cycle that pushes the boat along at about 5 knots (half throttle).

Hunter 22

I might be able to give you some answers. I have a 1982 Hunter 22 and I just finished doing a little work to the boat. I dry sail my hunter (keep it on its trailer). I believe that it takes about 30-36 inches of water to launch. Remember that the draft is about 2'6". Here is the main thing on launching that I encountered.....Make sure your swing keel will clear the back support of the trailer. Mine didn't and that caused a little ding that I had to fiberglass. I ended up raising my bunks up 3 inches. I am not sure about how to get the cushions. That answer also depends on what you are using the boat for. I cruise mine and my cushions were in good shape (thank goodness). They can be a bit expensive. If you are just day sailing, etc, why put cushions in it? I raced on a Paceship PY 23 and we took the cushions off of it. As far as an outboard....I have a normal shaft 1982 Johnson 4.5 HP outboard. It pushes my boat at 5.5 knots against a strong current. (the 5.5 was according to my GPS). My bracket is mounted low enough so I can get away with the normal sized shaft....but in waves it will sometimes let the prop cavitate. E-mail me if you need anymore help and I will try to give you more information. Matt Bad Obsession
