We are looking at an '84 Hunter 22 swing keel, and there is a rope coming through the dinnette with a cam cleat that the owner stated raised the keel. Questioning that the raising of the keel would require some sort of wench. Talked to Hunter and they stated there is in fact some sort of wench and cable, but did not know where it is located. Can anyone help?

no winch required

There is not winch for raising the centerboard on a Hunter 22. The centerboard does not contain any ballast so it does not require one. Inside the table there are two blocks that the rope runs through to give you a 2:1 purchase on the board. The blocks are connected to a cable which is attached to the top rear of the centerboard. You should be able to raise the board without too much effort by pulling on the rope. The ballast is under the cabin sole on either side of the centerboard trunk. Hope this helps.

Not sure you need a winch......

I have an '82 22 and you just pull the assembly up by hand. I think the whole rig weighs about 100 lbs, but my wife can raise if fine and she's pretty small. All of the mechanical advantage is inside the table, a diagram of which is posted here on the web site. So, no winch needed, just a good ole' tug with your arms. Good boat, we love it! I don't have that option ;)

A wench to pull up the drop keel... I didn't get one with my boat. Not likely that my wife would let me keep her anyway............

Now that's funny.

I tried to get one too, but wife made me throw her back. When I mentioned we could have kept her to clean the boat, she almost dove back after her!

"winch"

Thanks for not commenting on the improper spelling (and then change of meaning) of Winch. Also, the use of rope and line--just an oversight and brain "phart". We are pretty new to the internet, and are not certain we can locate the diagram, but will give it a shot as I'm sure it would prove very informative. Really do appreciate the information, and if you have time we'd like to hear more about how you like sailing her, where you sail etc. We currently have a 21 Clipper on our home lake in Nebraska, and a 27 on Lake McConaughy, but are looking at the '22 for "trailer sailing" and to replace the 21 at home. Interested in the 22 mostly for the swing keel as well as the nice depth. Have you seen anyone put a roller furler on the 22? If you have time to respond, we'd like to hear from you @ dandklusk@hotmail.com Ken

Winch

Dan, Thanks alot for your response--without any smart remarks on the misspelling (and changed meaning) of "winch". This really is something new to me, I am familiar a little with water ballast and keel boards, what is the weight of the ballast, and what does it consist of? With this set up, how does the boat point, and is she sensative to quick heel? Would like to hear more from you on your 22 and how you like sailing her, and where you sail? We currently have a 21 Clipper at home in Nebraska, and a 27 Hunter that we sail at Lake McConaughy, but are looking at the 22 for trailer sailing.
