I have a '82 Hunter 22. She displaces 3400 lbs. Recently my 8HP Johnson Sailmaster longhaft was stolen so I shopping for replacement. The question is, " Do I need the 8HP or can a 6 HP push her out of the channel. I really only use it to run out a 1/2 mile channel. Also, If anyone has a lead on one, send me a tip. D

Had an Oday 22 with a 4.5...

Johnson and it worked great. So, a 6hp should be perfect.

Standard is 2 hp per 1000 lbs

But with that said, a lot of the racers use little motors to push the boat around due to the weight when racing. I have a small 2.5 hp that will push my 3500 lb boat, but most of the time I use a 8 hp 2 stroke Merc. The 2.5 is enough to move it along about 3 to 3.5 knots. If you use your boat in tidal areas, high wind, rivers, or inlet areas, I would go back to the 8 hp. Also, the twin cyl. motors are much smoother than the single cyl motors. Thats another reason to go to a twin 6 or twin 8/9.9. Most of the 4,5 or 6 are single cyl. motors. Just some thoughts..Jack
