I don't use a motor anymore. My boat sails very nicely out to the racecourse and back to the dock without one, and I think the boat is a tad faster without the 65 or 70lbs hanging off the stern.. When I used the motor, I used a cable and lock. I would rather the thief get the motor without damaging the boat.

Assuming your outboard has toggles on the ends of the clamp screws, and there are holes in the toggles, you can simply make sure that they are turned to where the toggles swivel on the level. Then just put a padlock through the holes in both toggles so the clamps cannot be losened without first removing the lock. A neat trick a friend taught me when I first got my boat.

I tried the method of using the holes in the toggles one time and someone just broke the ends of the toggles off. The toggles are cast aluminum and the location at the toggle holes is a weak point.

I use a bicycle lock (cable with combination lock in one unit). I'm with Ray. If someone really wants it, I would rather not have the boat damaged also.
