I'm looking for information/web sites about modifications and/or customizations for Hunter 216's. I've recently purchased a 2004 Hunter 216 and while I have no immediate plans for any modifications I was wondering what was out there. RB

modifications

I've done the following modifications that required drilling holes: 1. added a swim ladder to the stern 2. placed a number of hooks and canvas storage compartments inside the cuddy cabin. The hooks were stick-on. 3. added a heal indicator to the right of the cabin-entrance. 4. added a boom-kicker I've also added trailer guides and a spare tire to the trailer. I had pictures of most of these on the hunter owners website before the website was reorganized. I'll try to get some of these pictures back on the website in the coming week or two. My H216 is a 2004 model.

Thanks I've heard some people have added seats/bunks in the cabin. Have you thought of doing the same. Also I'd love to see any pics you could provide. Ron

cabin

I haven't added any seats or bunks. I do, though, have a piece of foam and an outdoor bench cushion that I keep in the boat. When placed on the floor of the cabin, they provide a soft place to stretch out. It is used mainly by my kids (4 and 9 years old). I also keep a porta-potty in the cockpit. I just use the boat for day sailing. If I wanted to over-night on a boat, I would probably get a different boat with a cabin with accommodations. I’ll try to get some pictures posted this weekend.

Modifications to 216

Like Jeff I have added a swim ladder. I would highly recomend this addition. It makes it much easier getting off and on the boat from the water and when it is on the trailor. I also added several canvas and mesh bags. I got them a Target. The seemed to be desighned for garage and work shop storage. They work great and manage to keep things in place while sailing. If you are interested I can try to get you some photos . I don't know if they can be posted on this or if I would have to e-mail them to you. I am starting to think about adding a traveler. I no hunter sells one for the 216. I did not get it with the boat originaly but am starting to regret it. I was afraid it would make moving around the cockpit dificult. Now I wish I had the control of the sail a traveler would offer. Does any one have any experience with the traveler on a 216

Jeff - Thanks for the pictures. Looks fairly straight forward. What is the make of the ladder- looks like it fits pretty well.

Make of swim ladder

My swim ladder is a WINDLINE. I'll need to check the actual model number. Its a two-step folding version. It took a bit of work to get it to work, though. The brackets that come with it were too short to directly use. I had to supplement them with some extra aluminum strips (as you can see form the photo in the improvement section). I also ended up mounting it a bit too far stern so I added some plastic tubing so it presses against the stern of the boat appropriately when in use. People have commented on finding other makes that can be used directly without having to manufacture extra bracket supplements. It would be worth trying to get a make and model number of a swim ladder that fits "right out of the box". Although, mine is fully functional for me... Its nice to be able to easily get in the boat whether the boat is in the water or on the trailer.

More pictures

I posted some more pictures of some improvements for my H216. These were pictures I had posted previously in he website but were lost *o with the web-site re-organization. *box There were literally hundreds of great photos for all the Hunter models that are no longer on the website. I, at least, got some of my pictures posted back on there. Look under the improvement section for the H216.

Thanks for all your help. I'm going to incorporate many of your improvements. Any ideas on gary's suggestion about a traveler? Gary - any chance you could post your pictures on the web site so they can be readily available? Thanks again!

H216 Traveler

Mr. Ernie rigged up a rope traveler that is pretty slick and provides more cockpit room than the Hunter traveler. It might still be in the archives (he included pictures). If you can't find it, maybe you can sweet talk Mr. Ernie into suppling another pic. I personally have a problem in that I love the open cockpit design of the boat but would also love to have a traveler. I guess I finally opted on no traveler. Note the geometry of the boat with the mainsheet mounted toward the center of the boom and low in the cockpit somewhat negates the need for a traveler. I do have a rigid vang from Garhauer. With the Garhauer and the geometry, I can ease the main without significantly changing my sail shape. Sigh... Everything is a tradeoff...

traveler

I'm still prefering the open cockpit to the traveler at this point. I can provide a link to a dealer website that provides pictues of one rope traveler solution. Since it is discuraged to put dealer URLs in the forums, I will send the link to anyone who sends me an email. You can send me an email by finding me in the owners section.

positng photos

Ron I do not have photos on hand now. The boat is out on it's mooring and the weather reports are calling for a lot of rain this weekend. If I can get out to the boat I will take some pictures of the swim ladder and cabin storage bags and post them. As for the traveler I am still debating installing one. I agree with everyone that said they like the open cocpit. That is one of the major reasons we bought the 216. I would like to see the photos of the rope traveler system on the 216 if anyone can post them.

Pretty nifty traveler. Have you found a significant improvement in performance? How about freeing up space in the cockpit?

Traveler

It works pretty well. I race the 216 so having a traveler makes some difference. The topping lift arrangement leaves a lot to be desired and I'm probably going to redo that next year when I get back to being able to sail again.

More on traveler

I think if I got in and out of the boat over the stern, I would work out some sort of snatch block arrangement so that it could be disconnected on one side easily.
