We are considering buying a 2004 Hunter 216. The boat has a large crack in the conpanionway. Is this common or a known defect in the construction?

The Hunter ACP or plastic hulls had issues with cracks. I guess that's why they don't use ACP and went back to fiberglass.
Just do a web search for Hunter ACP cracks. I owned a Hunter 170 and loved it other than recurring cracks. It is usually an easy repair but expect future cracks.
If you really like the boat and everything else is in good shape, use that crack to bargin a lower price then repair it.

I have a 2003 (?) H216 and I love it. I had a companionway crack for a long time. It would close up when hot so to repair it, follow the ACP repair instructions, but try to do it when the hull is hot and the crack is closed. No big deal if you are ready to bite off a repair with fiberglass. You have to use the right resin...I suggest you buy resin from a dealer. The Fusion brand white spray paint from Ace Hardware is almost an exact match.
