Does anyone have experience with bottom painting a Hunter 216 moored in fresh water or salt water? If so, what paint was used and how has it held up since painting?

216 Sailing Ability
I have a 216 and am very pleased with it -- I have never sailed an Ensign 22 but having seen them and looking at the specs they really are two very different types of boats. The 216 is fast and tender with less than a crew of three in 12-15 kn of breeze. It's designed to be easily trailerable - I can set-up or take down mine in 45 minutes. It's much lighter than an Ensign 22 and has a retractable keel and rudder and a new 216 is much less expensive than most used Ensign 22s. The 216 should compete very well against the J-22s and J-24s. There have been no recalls that I am aware of but there are a couple of minor items that you will want to change or add. Before I would decide on either of them, I'd want to sail both before making a decision. The other strong consideration that I would have is if your plan is to race, pick a boat where there are, or are going to be, others of the same make to compete against. One it's more fun, and two, where you have an active fleet it is always easier to resell your boat when you decide to move up.

H 216 bottom Paint
I too have a H 216 that I am very satisfied with, but as the next seasons comes closer I too am struggling with the pros and cons of applying a bottom paint. I keep my boat at a local Yacht club in fresh water for the approx.5-6 months. Last seasons when I pulled it out it had a layer of scum on the underside and a ring around the water line. When the boat was on the trailer I was able to use a hull cleaner to remove the ring and the scum. This too quite some work with me on my back under the boat - not the best job in the world. I like the idea of having a white bottom and I've been told that there are anti-fouling waxes, although a web serarch hasn't turned up any. I was wondering if any readers know of an anti-fouling wax and if so how well it works. Failing that I am interested in any comments from owners of small boats such as the H 216 on anti-fouling paints for fresh water. Gary

Pettit Vivid
Pettit makes a White ablative bottom paint called Vivid. Ablatives are supposed to be good for trailered boats and that's the only white bottom paint I know of. Hope that helps.

H216 Bottom Paint
Thanks for the comments on bottom painting. It seems there is very little or no experience with coating the bottom of boats made of the Luran S material. I also pulled the boat out last fall and cleaned it as you described. I was on my back under the boat as well. I wish someone had some practical experience to share that has painted the bottom.

Interlux Bottomkote ACT
This will be my third season with my 216. I keep the boat in the water in Hull, MA for the season. I have used Interlux Bottomkote ACT Y7740 Gray White which was recommended by Hunter and have been pleased with the performance of this ablative paint. The gray white color looks very nice with the blue and gray strips along the water line. Because of the Luran it is recommended you use a light color to cut down on heat build up. I have had a thin coat of slime at the end of the season that was easily removed with power washer. Ernie

Bill, Your right. The ACT has to go in the water within 60 days of painting. If you want to look into a mulit-season paint you might want to check out Micron Extra or Micron CSC. An important item with the 216 is the color and both these paints come in Shark White (actually a light gray). I keep my boat in salt water for the season and have painted the bottom each year. /Ernie
