I just purchased a 2001 Hunter 212. It was used only one time by the original owner back in 2002 and has been sitting in a slip ever since. My question is about the turnbuckle on the lower stays being bent. Since both sides are bent in the same way I wonder if this is intentional. Anybody know?

I can't think of any reason why they would be bent intentionally. While I don't have any knowledge of that model boat they should be straight. The picture clearly show how the "T" does not sit correctly in the hardware. Not an extreme situation unless in sever weather but you will want to change the ends of the turnbuckle soon. Good news is one new one has two ends so you can replace both side. You may even be able to call or write the manufacture for more info and maybe they can supply the parts to replace the bent ones with. They might have more insight on how they got bent and what to do to so they don't bent again but I would suspect maybe during a mast raising or lowering is when it happened.
Easiest way to bend a turnbuckle like that is to have it jammed while you are putting up the mast.. Uhhhhh.. I have done three like that on a trailerable. Watch them carefully when erecting the mast at a launch ramp! If you straighten the lower part, it will work harden and be likely to crack. Be aware that one end is right hand thread and the other end is left hand thread so make sure you get the correct replacement. Good luck !!

Absolutely, vines, replacement's the right thing to do. After they are bent, they become a safety hazard; you do not want them failing under stress.
I have no doubt they were bent in stepping the mast. I too have bent more of these than I'd care to admit to.
The kids' only essential job when we step the mast is be sure those babies are sitting upright as we raise her.

I have bent several of these. Always keep one or two on hand just in case. I secure the thurnbuckles with a bungee cord. Put the metal hook into the turnbuckle body and loop the cord over the lifeline and down to the other one. Helps to keep the t-bolts straight up. Plus it adds some tension to the lifeline. I leave these on all the time, since I trailer the boat and am constantly stepping the mast.

so this wasnt fron the builder for a reason? I just purchased the same boat and found mine "tweaked" the exact same way .
