There is aHunter 18 with the rig and sails from a 170 for sale. The specs show that the 170 mast is actually taller than the 18 but the boom is shorter. 18 is considerably heavier and has more sail area. Does anyone know whether an 18 boom can be fitted on a 170 mast to accommodate the 18 mainsail? Thanks

I recall another thread about a similar ‘mixed” configuration. One of the theories was this was how Hunter resolved a warranty issue with a badly cracked 170 hull. The owner retained the used “rig” while Hunter supplied the new hull.

In any event :) to try to assist with your question I looked in the SBO store and the goosenecks for the 18 and 170 appear to be different so you would likely have to change that as well as the boom, @Dave Groshong would be the person who could clarify parts required.

I assume you want to replace the smaller 170 main with the one from the 18?

Thanks. Your correct. This too was the result of a warranty claim on a cracked plastic 170. Hunter just wrote back that the 170 mast is made by a different manufacturer and the mainsail track is too small. The 18 is almost twice the weight of the 170 and has about 30 more feet of sail area. So it appears the only solution is a new 18 rig and sails which would be prohibitive. Jerry

Yes there are weight and sail area differences but the design of both the 170 and 18 is to be a friendly daysailer not a class race boat so if the price was right it might still be worth considering. ;)
