I am considering buying a 170. Regarding aux power, I already own a 4hp Yamaha standard shaft. 170 literature suggests a 2.5 hp. Has anyone experienced problems using a larger motor? Will the standard outboard bracket support a 46 pound motor? Is a standard shaft length too short? Thanks.

Longer shaft

Pat, Hi, I keep my 170 at Battery Park in Sandusky. I have a Minnkota 46 which has a longer shaft and even with that it sometimes comes out of the water in the bay. By the way, I'm selling my 170 to by something bigger that I can overnight. I'd be happy to show it to you, or even take you for a sail. I looked at a 212 a few weeks back. It had a 4hp Tohatsu on it. The 212 uses the same motor mount with a reinforcement bar behind it. When the owner started the motor it was very floppy. Probably ok, but without the bar it would have been much worse. There was someone on the forum with a 4hp on their 170, but I don't remember who. JerryA

Perhaps interested in your boat

Jerry, thanks for the response. Several years ago I kept my Pacific Seacraft and my Herreschoff Eagle at Battery Park. What year is the 170 you are selling? I'll be travelling on business for a few days. Can you email me at patnev@aol.com.

Delivery to the following recipients failed.

Pat, I'm not sure why but I received "Delivery to the following recipients failed." when tried to send you another e-mail. Anyway... you can follow this link to see pictures of my 170. http://dirtracing.freeyellow.com/hunter170.html Then just e-mail me at racer16k@msn.com. I had "Purr'n" out for a sail this morning on the bay before the wind changed to the North. I sailed over by Cedar Point to look at the new coaster. Looks like it should be another fun one. JerryA

small boat for Lake Erie

Hi Jerry, I wonder if you have ever gone out on Lake Erie on what appeared to be the right day for such a small boat and found yourself in over your head (figuratively ) when the wind kicked up??? I have trailered my boat to Lake Huron twice when the weatherman said the wind would be calm, on both occasions the wind was really fierce when I got their. I was dissapointed by not sailing, but pretty glad it didn't kick up with me two miles from the boat launch. I had the wind kick up pretty strong when I was in Grand Traverse last month, I ended up turning around and going to a different boat launch, but it ended fine. I wish that I could reef my sail when I was single handing the boat, but I don't seem to have enough arms. john

Weather Underground

John, I use the weather underground website for Erie weather forecasts. Seems to be right on. A good example was Saturday. The forecast was calling for 5-10 mph West winds and then North winds building to 10-20 mph and waves building to 3-5ft and possible small craft advisory. The West winds are normal for this area. The North wind is not and indicated a storm front would probably be showing up in the afternoon. So I sailed in the bay until the wind shifted to the North and then I headed for the marina. I made sure not to get more than a few miles from the marina Saturday. About an hour after I got back the wind was more like 20-25mph and there were white caps on the bay. Shortly after that it rained. The one that got me was the off-shore wind that knocked me down earlier this season. The forecast predicted it, but I didn't imagine it would be like that. The days that I go out on the lake have good forecasts and usually the next day is very much the same. I think I could reef my main if I hove-to in a blow, but maybe not. If I know the wind is going to build beyond my comfort level, then I reef before I leave the marina. It still pulls the boat along smartly. I would still like to try Traverse Bay. JerryA
