I have just put my 146 on moooring off our beach (on Long Island Sound). I am unsure whether to leave centerboard up or down. I left up last night and this morning the boat is fine - but bobbing about a bit due to light swells. Would it be a strain to leave centerboard down? Does doing so lower sway of mast back and forth? Under what conditions should boat not be left on mooring?

Swaying Won't Hurt

If the boat is swaying, it won't hurt to leave it up. But leaving a centerboard down will cause undue pressure to be placed on the centerboard and subject it to lateral pressures as the boat sways. IMHO, this would eventually cause wear on the centerboard and would eventually develop unwanted slack and movement in the mechanism. Larger boat equipped with centerboards are advised to leave them up when moored.
