A couple of years ago i ran my Yanmar without the cooling water open. The engine smoked and quit it wouldn't start and I sailed back in (franticly). I phoned Yanmar and they said if it runs it's probably ok. Presently it's not starting I think due to the fact that I've been changing out my fuel filters etc and have air in my lines and it has sat all winter. BUT it occured to me that I may have scarred my cylinder and I cant get full compression. How do I check compression?

checking compression

John, if I understand correctly the engine has run after you forgot to open the water valve so don't jump the gun about low compresion. Get the fuel system blead and the engine running first. Even with low compression the engine should run.If after you get the engine running you still thing you have a problem get a mechanic to check the compression. The injectors will have to come out and you need a special diesel compression tester. Not worth the cost for only using once or twice and the mechanic can give you a "health" report as well. You di dnot mention the age and model yanmar engine you are working on. If still having problems check out the link below to yanmar help. This guy used to run a big yanmar dealership shop and is very good.
