I just took a basic fishfinder with a transome mounted sensor off my old deckboat. I was wondering if anyone had tried either of the following: 1. Installing the transome mounted sensor as a thru-hull but using the method of putting in the bilge but not thru the hull. 2. Mounting at the rear in some method that does NOT require putting holes in the boat?? Any words of wisdom much appreciated. BTW, the boat stays in the water full time except for maintenance and large low pressure areas that have missed us this year!! Fair winds, Bill

I had an older hummingbird fishfinder that I epoxyed the transducer to the hull next to the bilge pump and it worked pretty well. I recently purchased a lowrance 335i cdf that I built a stainless bracket for that bolts to the lower rudder bracket and extends under the hull about 16". The reason to mount the newer transducer under the hull is that it has a paddlewheel speed sensor built in. It works very well.

I epoxied mine to the inside of the hull
I've heard of people using all kinds of materials to secure the transducer to the inside of the hull; epoxy, 3M 4200, mineral oil in a PVC tube, vaseline, toilet ring sealing wax...even peanut butter! The main things to keep in mind are: 1) the sealing compound must have good acoustic properties 2) the transducer must be fixed securely in place 3) the transducer must be properly sealed to the hull (no air bubbles) 4) the location must have good acoustic properties, i.e. solid laminate 5) the location you select must be central and deep, so it will remain submerged even when the boat is heeling in waves I tested different locations near the keel of my boat by setting the transducer on a Ziplock bag partially filled with water until I got a good strong echo. Bill, I installed a Humminbird Depth/fishfinder on my H22 in my bilge and it works great. Instructions on mine said if mounting to inside of hull to use a slow curing epoxy. They suggest this because fast cure epoxies have a lot of air bubbles and not cool for transducers. Other than that you should not have any problems. I was going to buy just a depth gauge but it cost more than my depth/fishfinder and I can adust the screen to show some very large depth numbers and of course you have alarms, speed etc etc., all for under $150. I Used Silicone.
I installed my standard Hummingbird transducer next to the bilge pump in my H260. I used regular silicone - I was just very careful not to get any air bubbles. I thought was to try it and see if it works and - it did. Epoxy scares me because of its permanance.

Transducer clarification
Appreciate the info folks - just to clarify, those that have installed a fishfinder by afixing it to the hull, was it the type that is generally installed on the transome or does it matter? Intriged by the peanut butter suggestion though......think I'll go the silicon route first. Epoxy if it appears to work well over time. Fairwinds.

I have a Garmin Fishfinder which I use for a depthfinder. It is a transom model which I put in my 26 near the bilge pump with 4200. I am pleased as it works well and cost half as much as replacing my old through hull depthfinder.

Mounted my transom mount type inside - wax ring
I had my Hummingbird transducer monunted on the transom for a year but never liked the idea of hitting something with my keel first. I mouned mine in the v-birth with part if a toilet wax ring. It has been there 2 years with no problems. I checked it about a month ago and it's still just like I mounted it. I do not use this small area for any storage so no chance of dislodging it by mistake.

So I take it your used part of a wax ring to stick the unit to the hull - how thick would you say the wax was between the two surfaces? Thanks for the idea! Bill

Only enough to fill in the rough surface.
I broke off a piece about 2x2 inches and then pressed the transducer down into it until it was touching the surface of the hull. I pressed what squeezed out around the sides to help hold it. I've had no problems with it.
