Larry and Lin Pardey made that very modification for sailing in the tropics. I do remember that they said NEVER to leave them open while sailing and only have them open while anchored. Found this pic online but couldn't find any other written info. I do seem to remember that they fabricated some form of "backing disc" of aluminum to protect the glass while underway. It seemed to me to be a really cool idea albeit a little work would be involved.
I thought about a fixed pane portlight to get some lighti into the aft berth in my Hunter 31, but for the reason Steve articulated, I just can't bring myself to do it.
I would not recommend it. I have never seen it done before on a Catalina 30 (I have one) and you may compromise the integrity of the hull. Why are you looking to do this? Extra light or air into the front cabin? Give Catalina or Catalina Direct a call and ask them for a pov if you really want to do this.
