I am going to be waxing my hull during haul out in August and I am interested in any one's experience with non-abrasive methods of removing old wax from the hull. I know that I can use polish and or very fine (like 2000 grit) wet sanding to do this but I was hoping for a method that would not remove any gelcoat. Thanks in advance for any insights or replies. Kevin

I think Steve means PoliPrep

It will easily remove any residue wax that UV hasn't already taken care of. Wax generally only lasts 3-4 months before the sunlight degrades it.

If you mean 'real wax' .....

any 'strong' detergent will lift old wax. TriSodiumPhosphate (TSP), Sodium Silicate based detergents, etc. all remove wax.

3M Hull Wax

I used 3M hull wax and it has been on the hull for a year. Kevin

I wax after every sail

that got your attention, didn't it!? I use a hose attachment that sprays wax as I hose down the boat (it's made for car waxing, but the boat doesn't know the difference). That way I keep the hull coated and protected. I haven't seen any downside -- as far as I can tell.
