Hello everyone! We are looking at an O'Day 272 to purchase. It has been sitting on the trailer for about 12 years and there is a slight indentation staring in the hull where the aft port side rollers are on the trailer. They surveyor said sometimes these pop back out when it is in the water sometimes they don't. If it doesn't, how bad is this? Is the boat going to break in half? Will it just have an indentation below the waterline? He said it is in surprisingly good shape for the year and being in storage for so long. He said we will have to re-bed the stantions since they are beginning to leak. He said that is not a big deal it is a typical maintenance issue for boats about every ten years.

My 23 had been trailered for years by the PO without any keel support. It was not rollers, but bunks. Nevertheless, without supporting the keel, the hull flexes at the aft end of the bunks (which is actually made for a different boat...another story). Once I jack up the keel a little, the indentations disappear.
Anyway, the PO did this for years without supporting the keel, and apparently oblivious to the noticeable bounce in the boat on the trailer.

I agree. All stanchions leak. I wouldn't worry bout the oil canning unless you see cracks. Also look inside where the oil canning is and see if it's cracked through. I doubt it is.Sceter said:
My stanchions r below. Actually it is a mix of pulpit, chain plate, and stanchion repair, but all were done the same. U may just need to re seal. My core was rotted.

I agree. My 222 sat on a bunk trailer for a few years and developed a hull dimple at starboard aft. It didn't take long for dimple to disappear when boat was off trailer. There has been no detectable damage or problems - in fact now that it is gone, I couldn't pinpoint the exact location and size of former dimple.
Same here with my 222. When I bought it the trailer had a broken bunk so that allowed the front half to sag basically holding the starboard side up with one upright. The keel wasn't being held up by anything. All with several inches of water inside. Major dent in the hull. I was worried about how I was going to pop the dent out and reinforce that area from the inside. Once I got it on the lift I built, it settled out in no time with no evidence of any damage.
As for all the hardware, stanchions included, most of my stuff was leaking. Luckily none was extensive. I was able to clean out any rot from the mounting holes for most areas. I had to drill a few places out in the bow to get the rot out. Luckily I didn't have to recore anything. I did rebed everything with butyl rubber.
Thank you for all your responses. We decided to go ahead with the purchase. The owner took it over today and got new tires on it and is getting the basketball sized bees nest out of it. We pick it up Saturday.
