I have a 1984 O'day 19 (not a Mariner & not a 192; by the way - what is its model name?). I just discovered this terrific site and this is the first of a series of questions I have. A few years ago I somehow punched two small holes (size of a quarter to $0.50 piece) below the waterline at the bow. I speculate that I either did it launching from the trailer or hitting a large crab trap in Barnegat Bay (NJ). The guy at the powerboat shop who did the fiberglass repair in Reading (PA) said the hull was very thin and he wouldn't want to sail it. He suggested that I reinforce it, as a minimum with foam backing. I haven't sailed it since. I bought it used (I'm the third owner), but I don't know of any previous damage. Any comments or suggestions?

I also have an '84 19 and believe you're safe to sail. Your repairman probably didn't see all the flotation foam built into the hull. He may also be concerned about high-speed puntures which you won't have in a 19. The hull in a 19 will flex or oil-can. I can do so with palm pressure at certain points, and I've also seen it deflect when I have pivoted off a dock in a heavy wind. Neither gives me a concern about the boat. BTW, The model is 19. It doesn't have a snappy name, just good sailing with a great cockpit.

I second that its safe to sail
As it came from the factory your 19 was perfectly safe to sail. Assuming you've not done any major damage to the hull or that its been repaired correctly you should still be safe. Sailboat hulls are often much thinner than powerboat hulls - they're subjected to less stress and under normal conditions there is less energy involved in any knocks it may sustain (unless it gets hit by a powerboat but we'll let that be). If you trust the patches then I'd go sail the boat. If you don't trust the patches I'd have someone you trust take a look. Then I'd go sail the boat. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Odays are great boats
I own a 73 oday 20 and sail in nothing but rough weather. Feel very safe in my boat, for a 20 footer it's very stiff.Oday designed some great boats, there problems were in some of the older rigging ,it was undersized
