We have a 1978 hunter 25 it's in good shape except for a few minor things. The hull has funky brown staining just above the waterline that won't come off with any cleansers. Does anyone have a good trick that might work?
Oxalic based products like this seem to be the only ones that work on brown water line stains (algae or tannin from dead leaves). I think that IGP sealant might prevent penetration of the gelcoat by such stains but I have not got anyone to try it yet for this. However wax definately helps. Thanks Jim W
Hi, I cleaned/compounded/waxed/sealed my hull when it was pulled in the spring of 2002. Like you, I found that no normal cleaner would make a dent in the water line stains. I went to West Marine and they had specific products to clean water line stains. I forget exactly what I bought, but it worked great. I used it per the directions and the stains came right off.
I tried oxalic acid based deck cleaners with no luck. What turned out to be the easy solution, was to wet the hull (make sure to keep wet), and pour hydrochloric acid on the stain. Stain disappears instantly. Used about 1 quart for entire waterline and bow. Wear protective eye-wear, and thick chemical resistant gloves, and rinse promptly. Also, use caution not to breathe the vapors. Will require a new coat of wax afterward.
Found a product at the grocery store called majik. Its a rust remover for home use. this stuff is great! it will take rust and water stains off a boat hull in seconds! with almost no elbow grease. wipe a coat on let it sit a few seconds and wipe off the rust.
