I have the C&C classic anodized toe rain on my 1977 33. I have tried everything (treatments to the toe rail itself and various finishes on the hull) to get the black marks to stop forming below the toe rail holes. Any suggestions?
I have a Beneteau with a teak cap rail (no aluminum at all) and I also get the black marks. Not sure if it is just dirt, or something to do with the sealant (black) between the cap rail and deck. Any ideas on how to clean it without taking the wax off as well would be appreciated. I know about the 'black streak remover' products (some of which work better than others), but those products remove the wax.
The best solution is to prevent the staining in the first place. This can be accomplished by using a piece of line to allow the water to flow off the deck without touching the side of the hull. If the toe rail is metal it is easier to attach something to the rail than it would be with a teak toe rail. At least the problem can be confined to a smaller area. On our Catalina I inserted a small section of clear plastic water hose into the drain holes in the toe rail. This discharges the water away from the hull. (The staining is probably a result of the polution in the air.)
the "black streak" is almost certainly due to air pollution. It's typically worst when located under airport flight paths, or when dirt blows in to the Carribean from Africa, or other environmental sources. Once you get the streaks removed, and the hull re-waxed - keep on top of it, with (at least) weekly washing. Neither the toe rail itself, nor the hull-deck bedding (which, nonetheless, is very dirty stuff) are the likely problem. Regards, Gord
Check out Poly Glow Hull Restorer. They have a reprint from Practical Sailor about hull restorer products. I am a beliver since I used it. My boat is a 1977. After using Poly Prep(EZ)and wet sanding with 600 grit sandpaper plus applying five very eazy coats of restorer I have taken twenty years off it's looks. Water and dirt roll off like a ducks back. The porous fiberglass is sealed. Just make sure all stains are removed before applying Poly Glow.
