Hi, so now I have been going out on my recent bought Oday 222 and was wondering how fast these really go? I clocked a top speed of 7.2 mph and averaged about 4mph.

What have you guys clocked on an average sail and a top speed? Just trying to find out if my boat needs some tweaks or it sails as its supposed to. Just a comparison.

Thanks George

I like to see around 6 mph on average. Under power depending on how the boat is loaded, I can average 5 to six. The more weight in the bow the faster the boat will go. I have more power than it needs to get there, if I give more power the bow lifts and it wont go any faster, It is up against the hull speed. Under sail with a good breeze it will go 5 to 6 up wind, 6 to 7 on a reach and down wind. The last time I was out it was gusting to 30 knts and surfing down wind it hit up to 9.5 on a wave, thats the fastest I have recorded. I currently have new sails and rigging and have noticed the boat seems to average a little more speed.

If I understand this correctly, the theoretical calculation is:

Maximum Speed of a Single-Hull Displacement Boat :

Hull Speed = 1.34 x the square root of the LWL( length of the hull at the waterline). The O’day 222 LWL= 19.58 ft. So hull speed max displacement is 5.93 knots or 6.82mph. Anything above that, the hull is not moving as a displacement hull.

Wow awesome responses. Okay so I think I have been doing good. With more practice out there I should be getting my average 4mph to 5-6mph easily. I also don't want to make it uncomfortable to my passengers. :)
