Color matching is for the pros. I had a gouge 1/2" wide x 18-24" long on the beam of my Hunter. It took the guy (AJ) about 5 hrs. to completely repair the scratch, re-gelcoat and polish it out.

No one in our marina that had seen the gouge was able to find the repair. The guy that did this just used off the shelf gelcoat and some tint (yellow & black). It was an amazing repair and I doubt many amatures would be able to do this.

If you really do not care about the final outcome then the repair would be much easier. Depending on the depth of the scratch you will need more than gelcoat to make the repair. The area may need to be ground out and built up with fiberglass cloth and resin. Once that process is complete, the gelcoat will then be applied.
