I am considering purchasing my first boat, a Catalina 22. The hull requires sanding and refinshing. As far as the top deck goes, the nonskid was painted a wicked orange color. Not even a neat job. Is there some stripper product available that will remove the paint easily?

blast it

there used to be places that would remove bottom paint by shot blasting the hull with crushed walnut shells. also, there are industrial yards that use glass beads to remove rust from boxcars, oil tankers and things like that. you would need to be careful not to let the nozzle get to close to the fiberglass so as not to damage it. it seems like a cleaner solution that stripper....but yes, there are many brands of paint stripper available that will do what you need.

Peel Away

Worked for me. I stripped the bottom paint, probably five layers, down to the barrier coat. Probably will work on the non-skid. Bought mine at Home Depot, much much cheaper. Paul

No blasting, Peel Away

I think the Peel Away will do the trick. I used it to soften up mega layers of paint, and then I could easily scrape it clean. Regards, Ted

Forget It

You can find good boats without all the work, some people take care of their boats, find one.

Thanks

Thanks for the responses. After looking at the boat I am heeding Roy's advice to find another without all the work. What a shame.

Paint remover

Skipping a boat with this kind of problem is a smart move. Who knows what the orange paint may be masking?
