Hull problem

I have just had my 1990 Hunter 30 surveyed and a section of hull about 2' X 2' was found that was flatter than the rest and was slightly springy. The surveyor wasn't too sure what was wrong as the hull was lined and looked perfectly OK from the inside. He thought that the hull had come unstuck from the liner. Repairing looked expensive. Any ideas out there what can be done? A key question appears to be whether the hull is cored or solid, does anyone know? Thanks for your help.

John, a good repair yard can restore a section...

of the hull to better than new. Check around and get several estimates. Keep your insurance company in the loop and talk to them about a claim if you can relate it to an accident. Probably not though. Terry

Re Hull Problem

Terry, Thanks very much for your response, the problem is though that it is impossible to get an estimate without at least opening up the inside liner to see what the problem is. Once a yard does that then you are really committed. What I'm trying to do is get some idea of what I am getting myself into before going too far down the boatyard route. Thanks again, John

John, you might want to get a different surveyor..

or at least consider it. A good surveyor should be able to tell you what the problem is, possible solutions and an idea of the repair costs. Granted, some of the damage may be covered by the liner, but the surveyor that I had knew enough about glass boats and their construction to determine the extent of the damage. In my case he placed certain conditions on parts of his estimate until the yard actually cut into the glass. Terry

John, another consideration is to have the yard..

give you a free estimate, which the repair yard did in my situation. The yard owner and his glass repairman traveled thirty miles to my boat to look at the damaged section and came up with a free estimate that ended up being pretty close to the final repair bill. A good yard will do you a professional job. Terry

Re Hull Problem

Terry, Thanks a lot for all your suggestions, they are very helpful and give me confidence that the problem can be fixed OK. It sounds as though you have had similar problems, was that with a "30"? I was hoping that it might be possible to get information from Hunter regarding the construction but don't see any links to technical support on their website.

Call Hunter

Call the Hunter factory (800-771-5556), tell them you are a 30 owner with a problem and they will turn you over to someone qualified to answer your questions. I always receive prompt and efficient answers when I call about my 30T (1991).

John, you are welcome. It is a good suggestion...

to contact Hunter regarding your hull situation. However, before you do a surveyor's professional assessment will give you and Hunter needed information to make an informed repair statement of work. I've found Hunter to be very responsive especially when they have a critical independent eye involved. It makes a good defense. Terry
