I have a old day sailer and would like to change the color of the hood. What type of paint should I use and where should I get it. Thank you..

Jason - How good do you want it to look? On a Daysailer I'd day go nuts, the hull is small so it won't take nearly as long as a larger boat and you'll have a boat you can be really proud of. I would roll and tip two part poly. I like Interlux but it really doesn't matter as long as you go with a reputable two part marine paint. Check out the Interlux.com website for details. The quality of the finish is really determined largely by prep work. You need to strip any old paint on the topsides or below the waterline, dewax with a solvent, fair any nicks, paint with high build primer, sand until its so fair you can't feel it - all before you get to the color coats. You're looking at several days work interrupted by periods to let the paints dry, but the result will be awesome. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Thanks, Justin

Read your advice to Jason. I've been working on the rudder on my 272 this winter and have now oversized and epoxied the holes where the pintles are fastened to the rudder. They are now ready to be rebored. Over the years the Foss foam rudder has compressed where I tighten the bolts which fasten the pintle straps into place and I got a fix suggestion from R.W. which has worked out well. Now... It's that last little bit of fairing that has been driving me crazy. I put down some compound, sand, repeat, repeat, and it still doesn't feel "right". Then I read your reply about a high build primer. I want to paint the rudder when I'm done and wondered about primers. I've looked at the Interlux 2-part paints but wasn't aware of any primer that would help me get the finish I want before I put the final coat on. I'll check it out. Any other suggestions? As always, Thanks, Tom
