Hull Number vin numbers questions

The hull number is also part of the "VIN" or serial number. For example, a typical VIN number may be AMN024200575. In this case, the hull number is 2420. I have no idea what the other numbers mean. However, I speculate that the AMN is for Albin Marin, and the first 0 is Albin's optimistic means of saying that they are going to sell between 10000 and 99999 vessels. Not sure what the 0575 stands for...perhaps an engine type designator?

Filed under the category of things we don't really care about, the VIN is also stamped into the upper starboard corner of the transom on our Vega. So, in addition to the mainsail and bronze plaque, you could hang over the stern and read the number upside down in a nice following sea if you so desire.

Happy Saturday.

The 0575 is the month and year it was built.

My Vega (1071) has a number under the v-berth on a thick piece of
fibreglas in perforated letters that say NO 54886 and NET 5. Never have
figured out what this one is. Anyone know?

Looks like a USCG documentation # and net tonnage. The tonnage is about right, but I think the # should have one or two more digits, unless it's a really old one. Has the boat ever been documented in the US?

I have a piece of fiberglass with perforated numbers on it.
It lives underneath the starboard side seat inside the locker, epoxied on the hull.

That is a US Coast Guard Document number. Your boat was documented at some time. Net 5 refers to tonnage, the minimum size for US documented vessels. A Vega measures 5 net tons under the formula used by the USCG.

I think you're right (and I did leave out a digit or two). I don't have
any old documentation history. The plate was under the old holding tank
and I only found it when replacing the tank. The tank has a date of
1978 and the boat was built in 1971. So, someone in the early-mid 70s
documented the boat.

Is there any advantage to redocumenting her? Any shortcut in the
process if previously documented? Any reason to wait to reinstall the
holding tank? Thanks.

Official numbers are either 6 or 7 digits, even old ones.

You can save state annual registration fees (in some states) if you document, plus it is cool not to have bow numbers.

Your other questions, go to http://www.uscg.mil/hq/cg5/nvdc/ , see their FAQ's, or call and ask for a 'renewal specialist. They are very helpful.Nicholas H. Walsh P.A.
