Hull Number Question on '80 O'day 25

I am working on my boat insurance quote and got my title out. My title has a 5 charactor HIN. I then noticed the folder the title was in has a 12 character number written on it, which contains the 5 character number that is on my title.
Boy am I confused and a little bit worried my title is showing an abreviated number. The shorter number was on the previous title but did someone along the way record the shortened number by mistake?
The longer number does have 80C on the end and I believe the 80 refers to the year.

How many characters should my hull number be? Guess I need to find it on my boat.

I wonder how much this really matters?

The VIN number should be on the upper right hand corner of the outside transom on your boat, I think. At least that's where mine is located.
I have a copy of the O'Day format sheet that I got off Rudy years ago which explains the numbering systems in both the old and new formats. I haven't been able to upload it to this site for some reason but I can send it to you. Email me at sailtrinkka1986@verizon.net and I send it to you.
You'll probably have to go to the Registry and bring a paper with pencil scraping of the embossed VIN number with you to show them. This is what I had to do years ago when I found out my numbers were screwed up on my registration. They soaked me about $15.00 for getting it straightened out. They may do it different in your state.

Thanks for reinforcing the conclusion I came to after sleeping on it. Also, I learned this morning if I need to search for something to use Google. The search function on this site is pretty bad. Good not find relative threads. Used Google and found several threads relating to HINs.

I was thinking the HIN was pretty short when the title was signed over to me. Too excited about getting the boat to double check on the hull itself. I assumed the old title was correct. Never assume.

HIN should be 12-digits
For a 1980 model O'DAY it will read something like this;
XDYGxxxxM80C Where XDY = O'DAY (that was the MIC or Manufacturers ID Code)
G = 25
xxxx will be your sail# or Hull#
M80 = 1980 Model Year
C = month of Manufacture, C = October since the Model year ran August to July and for 1980 that would be August 1979 to July 1980.

Rod, 2425 finishes that out. Is it common to have the number on the sail in large letters or is it like a serial number for the sail?

Some sailmakers put the Sail or Hull # on the mainsail, others don't. Unless you race it really isn't necessary. However, it DOES look cool!
